Sugary drinks fee gains traction in Hawaii Senate

HONOLULU (AP) -- The state Senate judiciary committee has pushed forward a proposal to add a fee to sugary beverages in Hawaii.
The judiciary committee's vote Tuesday came just a day after the Senate health committee approved the same bill.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie says the fee is an important way to fight obesity.
The governor says the fee could raise $38 million in revenue over the next two years while reducing consumption of sugary drinks by 8 percent to 10 percent.

There is no scientific reason to do this except it suits your own misguided and incorrect assumptions.

(18,124 posts)'sugar blues' a 60's book. My point is obesity because of over consumption of the wrong types of food and beverage is that particular individuals issue. All should not be penalized. You learn about self-discipline and how most obesity could be solved and come back and try, try mind you to educate me again. I understand that a parent should be watching what a child consumes. Obviously you shot without aiming. Better watch that foot.

(14,087 posts)Aside from the fact that so much roundup-resistant GMO corn is going into the HFCS, and which is totally poison, no matter which way you slice it, adding this charge could be used to help offset the price of medicaid, medicare, and state insurance pools under the AHCA. If the extra tax was used for health care, exclusively, we should do it nation-wide, like we do gasoline tax for highways.

(23,720 posts)Tax cakes, cookies, pies, ice cream and sugar, then we can go for butter, milk and cheese. Bread won't be far behind, then chicken, beef and pork . People really need to think about how far they want to go when it comes to legislating what foods others consume.
