Christopher Dorner manhunt: former LAPD officer could face death penalty

Source: The Guardian

Police in California are chasing more than 1,000 tips and reported sightings of Christopher Dorner, the fugitive former police officer who has eluded a massive manhunt and is eligible for the death penalty if caught.

Detectives on Tuesday were examining video footage of a man resembling Dorner buying scuba diving equipment at a store in Torrance days before he allegedly killed three people in a vendetta against the Los Angeles police department.

Authorities also investigated the possibility an associate identified only as JY helped the rogue former officer evade a dragnet in Big Bear, a ski resort where Dorner's pick-up truck was found burning and abandoned last Thursday.

Paul Zellerbach, the county district attorney of Riverside, where Dorner, 33, allegedly killed one officer and wounded two others, cited special circumstances in murder charges which made the fugitive eligible for execution and rapid extradition should he be caught outside the state.

2. We already knew that

That's why the cops are opening fire on any vehicle that even remotely resembles his truck. The cops want to administer the execution without all the pesky court of law stuff.

3. Please.

If they cops put less then 10 bullets in him, I'll be rather surprised.

8. If they put less than 100 bullets in nearby cars, trees, roofs, and whatever else is in the area,

maybe we'll all be surprised.

4. I imagine he knew he would face the DP when he went on his murder spree.

Jury selection for his trial would be mighty interesting, as would choice of venue.

5. Don't kid youself about a jury trial

This guy will never see the inside of a courtroom.

The LAPD and other law enforcement agencies have pretty much made that clear. Their goal is to kill him before he's taken into custody.

6. Agreed, especially since Dorner has indicated that he'd rather die than

get taken into custody.

But, in the off-chance they do take him alive, it would be interesting.

9. This is just PR by the DA.

CA has effectively ended the DP. Last execution was in 2006 and recently the Chief Justice of the CA SC said there would be no executions for at least the next three years.

10. I'm not thinking that this guy will be taken alive, if he hasn't already commited suicide.

12. Yeah...

...he's going to get the death penalty, one way or another. I bet you he goes over a cliff any minute, just so the cops won't get to take him out... I hear they are shooting and chasing a truck right now in Big Bear Park... I wouldn't want to be Dorner.

15. He won't live to see a courtroom -

- especially not since he's just injured two officers. He's truly the Walking Dead - either by his hand or theirs.

16. I don't believe the people around here lately...........

......it's almost like they're rooting for him. Whether they capture him dead or alive, or if he commits suicide (a likely outcome), he's a MURDERER who has been terrorizing the people in the area for nine days, two more today.

But we have people saying negative and obnoxious things about those who are tracking him down? What's going on with society these days??

18. Some fucknut just told me he was 'executed for daring to look wrong at 'Murca.'

Seriously, someone said that. Without irony.

Now I understand the women who fall in love with serial killers behind bars.
