Todd Hughes Appointment: Obama Nominates Openly Gay Judge for Court of Appeals

President Barack Obama nominated openly gay Justice Department attorney Todd Hughes to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Thursday, a move that drew praise from LGBT groups. Hughes would be the first openly gay judge to sit on the federal appeals court bench if confirmed by the Senate.

Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund and Institute, issued a statement applauding Obama for the nomination.

If confirmed, Todd Hughes would become the first openly gay federal appeals court judge in U.S. history. His nomination is a testament to the expanding opportunities for openly LGBT Americans who want to serve their country, and to the president's respect for the depth of talent and experience within the LGBT community. We look forward to his confirmation by the U.S. Senate," Wolfe said.

It's not the first time the president has nominated an openly gay man to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. In April 2010, Obama nominated Deward DuMont. After waiting more than 18 months for a confirmation hearing, however, he withdrew his nomination.

Obama also nominated Raymond Chen, a lawyer in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, for the Court of Appeals, on Thursday.

Obama has been open with his support of equal rights for the LGBT community, including same-sex marriage. His inaugural address made history, including gay rights for the first time. In 2010, it was reported that Obama had appointed more openly gay officials than any other president.

2. I applaud this, but won't it be lovely ...

.... when people don't have to be classified anymore?

When people are just ... people? When we're just 'a senator', 'a judge', 'an athlete', etc?

5. It would be lovely but that time has not arrived yet

Critical mass has not been reached yet. Too many people out there still have amazingly skewed views on LGBTQ people. So for now, pointing out accomplished & successful Gay people helps to dispel prejudice...plus it will give confidence to other LBGTQ people to come out, further dispelling prejudice. It becomes a snowball effect and soon it will be just like you said. No one will care so it won't even be mentioned anymore....and yes, that will be lovely.

9. Just curious...

What does the "Q" stand for?

I have always wondered why "Intersexed" is not included? To me they are the most demonized group there is...Especially considering many of them were "surgically corrected" when they were babies with no way to reverse the "correction" & are now not allowed to marry because they were classified the wrong sex to begin with.

10. Q stands for "Questioning"

I think intersexed could be lumped in with Transgender for the most part. But you do bring up a valid point about the surgically corrected babies.

6. I was thinking the same thing!

Wouldn't it be nice if the person nominated was nominated because he/she was the best candidate - without anything more required.

That said, I do understand why this is important at this time in history. I will simply welcome the time when it is no longer important.
