Most in Newtown crowd favor gun control

Newtown - Sandy Hook residents responded to Second Amendment rights advocates by quoting the Declaration of Independence. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are our inalienable rights, said David Wheeler, the father of 6-year-old Newtown shooting victim Benjamin Wheeler.

"The liberty of any person to own a military-style assault weapon and high-capacity magazine and keep them in their home is second to the right of my son to his life," Wheeler said.

Newtown officials, parents of Newtown victims and parents of Newtown survivors took the lead at the legislature's final scheduled Bipartisan Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention and Children's Safety hearing Wednesday at Newtown High School. The majority of the speakers said they wanted stricter gun control laws, improved mental health services, safer schools and better parenting.

Seemingly common sense reaction.

The parents of the victims have been terrific in their bravery and outspokenness as it relates to this tragedy.

1. That's good news. But, people in other communities matter, too.

It does bother me that the focus is so much on Newtown and not on the nation at large. So many recourses went to Newtown after the tragedy that NEVER go to the families of those murdered in Chicago and other cities. It's all sad.

2. You're absolutely right.

But Newtown serves a useful purpose as a flashpoint for discussion that I believe encompasses all gun violence, not just that one horrific incident.
