Sen. Vitter: Marco Rubio 'naive' about immigration

Source: USA Today

Need a sign that immigration will be tough sledding in Congress, especially for Republicans?

Sen. David Vitter, a conservative from Louisiana, called his GOP colleague Marco Rubio "amazingly naive" and "nuts" during a stint Wednesday on Laura Ingraham's radio show. Vitter's quotes and audio from the interview were posted on a blog on Ingraham's website.

Rubio, a freshman from Florida, is one of four Republicans behind a bipartisan framework for sweeping changes to the immigration system, including a path to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants already in the USA. The path to citizenship would not kick in until improvements are made to border security and workplace enforcement under the guidelines announced earlier this week.

"I love and respect Marco. I think he's just amazingly naive on this issue," said Vitter, who joined the Senate in 2005. "This is the same formula we've seen before. ... Promises of enforcement never materialize and the amnesty happens immediately."

4. Mrs Vitters is Naive

Mrs Vitters is sadly naive if she thinks her husband just "make a mistake" and that "it will never happen again." I sincerely felt sorry for her standing next to him when the story broke, yet at the same time I just can't understand why they put up with it? Maybe I'm the one who is naive and should realize it's all about the power and position.

7. As an aside, I honestly wonder how an immigration bill could survive a Republican filibuster.

Vitter is likely not the only Republican who would filibuster such a bill, I'm afraid.

24. There is a danger that republicans will decide to continue to shoot themselves in the foot

in order to keep their freeper base happy. Some of their politicians seem to have learned a lesson from last year's election, but many others seem determined to continue on their previous path to oblivion by writing off Hispanics, Asian, other immigrant communities and independents.

That would be bad for the country and the people this reformed is designed to help, but it may be unavoidable. The only silver lining I see in that is that it would quicken the descent of their party into irrelevancy in the long run.

8. It makes me want to find a diaper and leave a "present" in it

and then mail it to him. That's what I think about Vitter. Though it would be a huge waste of time given they now screen everything.

22. There's no room in the GOP even for the likes of Rubio.

And, for that, I'm glad. Not that I think the Democratic Party should welcome the likes of Rubio either.

I pray that Vitter is the GOP candidate for president in 2016. It will never happen, but I can hope!

27. Rubio is not naive. Rubio wants to be president.

Rubio has Jeb advising him. All Vitter is doing is giving Rubio some nice campaign material that will differentiate him from the old GOP guard. Look how well this works for Christie - all Christie has to do is pretend to play nice and some Dem voters slaver all over him.
Rubio can be the GOP guy who really wants to help immigrants, but his hands are tied by the old meanies. Rubio is aiming for the Hispanic vote, pure and simple. Won't work as well in Florida perhaps, since there are Cubans who resent that Rubio lied about his parents "escaping Castro". No, they came here a few years before. He has some money indiscretions to clear up, and for a while a very pretty health care lobbyist seemed to show up wherever he traveled, he may have bought her tickets, whatever. but remember it is always OK for Republicans to lie, cheat, and steal, and now we have internet scrubbers, so I don't think Rubio getting bloodied by the GOP hurts him unless it actually keeps him out of the primaries.

"naive" on an issue like immigration reform is going to make you seem credible, Senator Diapeypants.
