Suspect in doctor's shooting identified (In Newport Beach, CA)

NEWPORT BEACH – A 75-year-old man from Lake Elsinore is in custody on suspicion of shooting and killing a doctor Monday, authorities said.

Stanwood Fred Elkus was taken into custody in the second-floor offices of 520 Superior Ave., where the doctor's offices were located, Newport Beach Police officials said Tuesday morning. Authorities said about a half-dozen shots were fired at about 2:45 p.m. inside the Newport Beach medical offices.

The doctor was identified as Ronald Franklin Gilbert, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The 52-year-old physician worked at the Hoag-affiliated Orange Coast Urology. His 53rd birthday would have been Wednesday.

Newport Beach Police officials have not released any details on a possible motive for the shooting.

Dr. Gilbert was the kindest, sweetest doctor I ever met. He once saw my son (when he was 4) at his house on a Sunday for a problem. Who knows what motivated the 75-year-old, if anything. All I know is if that man did not have a gun, Ron would be alive today. And his wife and young kids wouldn't be planning a funeral today.

As much as we all are shocked by senseless killings, having such events close to home is even more devastating.

I wish that we started at kindergarten to teach that violence of any shape is not the way to solve problems. And stop putting cowboys as our role models.

Start teaching them when they're young. Stopping corporal punishment will be a good start.
