Suspect in doctor's shooting identified (In Newport Beach, CA)This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by OKNancy (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum). NEWPORT BEACH – A 75-year-old man from Lake Elsinore is in custody on suspicion of shooting and killing a doctor Monday, authorities said. Stanwood Fred Elkus was taken into custody in the second-floor offices of 520 Superior Ave., where the doctor's offices were located, Newport Beach Police officials said Tuesday morning. Authorities said about a half-dozen shots were fired at about 2:45 p.m. inside the Newport Beach medical offices. The doctor was identified as Ronald Franklin Gilbert, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The 52-year-old physician worked at the Hoag-affiliated Orange Coast Urology. His 53rd birthday would have been Wednesday. Newport Beach Police officials have not released any details on a possible motive for the shooting. Read more: http://www.ocregister.com/news/doctor-409585-beach-police.html

3. Ron Gilbert was a great doctor and family friend.

I posted about this in the California forum.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10402958 Dr. Gilbert was the kindest, sweetest doctor I ever met. He once saw my son (when he was 4) at his house on a Sunday for a problem. Who knows what motivated the 75-year-old, if anything. All I know is if that man did not have a gun, Ron would be alive today. And his wife and young kids wouldn't be planning a funeral today. |

4. My deepest condolences

As much as we all are shocked by senseless killings, having such events close to home is even more devastating.
I wish that we started at kindergarten to teach that violence of any shape is not the way to solve problems. And stop putting cowboys as our role models. |

Start teaching them when they're young. Stopping corporal punishment will be a good start.
You don't teach violence is wrong with violence. |
