NRA’s LaPierre: Universal Background Checks A Waste Of Time

Source: TPM

EVAN MCMORRIS-SANTORO 1:14 PM EST, TUESDAY JANUARY 29, 2013

There's no point in pursuing universal background checks for firearms purchases, National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre plans to tell the Senate tomorrow, because bad guys will get guns anway.

LaPierre is among those scheduled to tesify at the Senate Judiciary Committee's gun violence hearing Wednesday. The NRA sent out his testimoy Tuesday. LaPierre once again plans to tout the NRA's call for armed guards in every school as well as the group's call for loosen privacy laws the group says keep mental health records from being included in the extisting background check system. But when it comes to expanding background checks to cover all firearms transactions, LaPierre will tell the Senate there's little point.

"When it comes to the issue of background checks, let’s be honest – background checks will never be 'universal' – because criminals will never submit to them," LaPierre's testimony reads.
LaPierre will say the NRA is ready to pushback on gun control advocates calling for new legislation after Newtown.

"While we’re ready to participate in a meaningful effort to solve these pressing problems, we must respectfully – but honestly and firmly – disagree with some members of this committee, many in the media, and all of the gun control groups on what will keep our kids and our streets safe," the testimony read. "Law-abiding gun owners will not accept blame for the acts of violent or deranged criminals. Nor do we believe the government should dictate what we can lawfully own and use to protect our families."

2. So why is Wacko Wayne advocating for access to people's mental health records

if he is against a universal background check? Could it possibly be that the ONLY thing he cares about is the sale of more guns and ammunition?

29. He is obviously completely changing his mind on that point entirely. Right?

I mean, you can't have both at the same time.

3. What Constitutes A Criminal?.....

Was the guy that shot up the theater a criminal before he did the shooting? Was the guy that went into the Newtown, Ct school a criminal before he went into the school and shot 26? Were they criminals before they did the shooting or did they become criminals after the deed was done?

If there is something we can learn by using a 'background check' to prevent shootings like these from happening - we should do it.

7. All of them had a history mental illness. That should be included in background checks.

Even Wacko Wayne says so. But then, he does not want universal background checks, as if some bullets are less lethal than others.

25. I think mass murders = cash cow for the NRA.

Once a newtown happens, Wayne the peter can send out "DEMOCRATS WANT TO TAKE AWAY YOUR GUNS AND END THE 2nd AMENDMENT" fundraising emails and get his base fired up buying heavy weaponry en masse, generating huge profit for gun companies thus more donations to the NRA, maintaining the cycle of keeping gun laws weak and keeping the cash flowing.

5. So he wants to loosen privacy laws under the 5th and 14th amendments

regarding medical records and the doctor patient privilege such as that evoked in Roe v. Wade, but he doesn't want any impingement whatsoever on the 2nd amendment. This should be interesting.

90%+ of the American public support universal BGC's. NRA needs to just go back to it's roots or just go away.

Right? If the production of guns stops, then eventually nobody has guns, not even bad people.

12. Nope.

Lapierre and the NRA are wrong on the issue of background checks and I don't believe that they represent the opinion of a majority of gun owners in this country, in that regard. Background checks, including access to mental health records, should be part of every firearms transfer in this country and there should be stiff, enforced penalties for evading such a requirement. I believe that there would be overwhelming support for such a regulatory change, it's a shame that politicians are more interested in grandstanding over proposals that have no chance of being enacted, instead of focusing on what can be realistically achieved.

The more he opens his mouth the worse the NRA and its affiliates look. There is no chance that reason or common sense will change their minds because of the obvious, they possess neither. The more they (he) seek (s) the spotlight the better.

24. Unfortunately, Wayne is correct to an extent.

Just not for the reasons he states.

Laws are useful only to the extent that they are enforced. Unfortunately, federal and state governments have abysmal track records when it comes to enforcing gun laws. Straw purchases and gun trafficking are already illegal, but would you know it based on the number of offenders brought to trial? Even arrested?

If the current laws are not getting enforced, what is the point of adding more that will not be enforced?

On the other hand, if enforcement was not the problem, universal background checks would be a great thing if properly implemented.
