Norovirus: Why washing your hands isn't enough

It gets in your food, in your laundry, it sticks to plates and it might even float into the air when you flush your toilet. A new strain of norovirus -- often called stomach flu -- is going around and itís going to be very hard to avoid it, experts say.
Federal health officials say a new strain, called the Sydney strain, is now causing most of the misery across the United States and the world. The virus, sometimes known as Norwalk virus or winter vomiting disease, causes vomiting, diarrhea and that someone-just-hit-me-with-a-plank feeling.
Thereís no real treatment for it except for waiting it out, no vaccine, and recent studies show itís one of the hardest viruses to get rid of. Simple cleaning alone doesnít always kill it, and it takes just a few particles of virus to sicken a person.

1. Supporting unions will slow norovirus down!

Complicating the problem, most restaurant workers donít get paid sick leave, so if they miss work, they donít get paid. This means many workers come in sick, and they can spread the virus to hundreds of customers. Food handlers, dishwashers, even staff who bus and clear tables, all can spread the germ.

In June, the Food Chain Workers Alliance issued a report showing that only 21 percent of workers surveyed could take a paid sick day off work. More than half said they come to work sick because they cannot take time off.

2. No sick leave? Ha, many food establishments force sick employees to come in.

No care for their worker nor their customers.

Support unions!

3. I have had this gift about a half dozen times.

"Misery"doesn't quite give it enough respect.

Every winter we get outbreaks of this at work. About four years ago it took out about 10% of the workforce.

9. I wish I could nest!!

I got to go to work and in this area it means public transportation (NY Metro area). No way to avoid people and their bugs.

8. One of many reasons to never go on a cruise

Norovirus
Perfect opportunity for your partner to off you without leaving a trace of evidence
It's like being locked in a train on vacation
it's boring.
(I'm imagining the last two since I've never been on a cruise and never will take one).

This is a feature article. If it would still be news in a week or a month, then it isn't breaking.
