Rhode Island House passes gay marriage bill

Source: AP

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) The Rhode Island House has overwhelmingly passed legislation to allow gay couples to marry.

The House passed the legislation 51-19 Thursday following an emotional debate that touched on religion, civil rights and the nature of marriage.

The bill now moves to the Senate, where supporters and opponents say its fate is difficult to predict.

-snip-

Rhode Island is now the only state in New England that doesn't allow same-sex couples to wed.

1. Glad to hear it.

I hope the senate has the wisdom to pass the bill as well.

2. And so the slow march toward marriage equality progresses.....

It will be the knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, Bible-thumping South that will bring up the rear once again.

6. And that's one of the reasons

I fear that the SCOTUS case concerning equal marriage may be premature. When Loving vs. Virginia was decided in 1967, banning limitations on interracial marriage, it was only in the South that those laws existed, or were at least enforced. If the SCOTUS has to decide the case with only one major region of the country (plus Washington and Iowa) in favor of marriage equality, we're asking them to take a really mighty leap.

I want them to take that leap, but it's not the same thing as throwing out laws from a century ago that were the backlash to Reconstruction, like the 1967 Court did.

7. I'm from Rhode Island.

As a Rhode Islander, I hope the Senate passes marriage equality, but I am not very optimistic. The RI Senate is full of fake Democrats who are in the Bishop's pocket.

People in this state need to stop voting for people because they have a D next to their name and be more involved in primary challenges..
