David Frum: Women in combat will push down military qualifications
By Eric W. Dolan
Wednesday, January 23, 2013 22:43 EST

Conservative columnist David Frum said Wednesday that it was a bad idea to allow women to fill combat roles in the U.S. military.

Frum, an editor at Newsweek and The Daily Beast, explained on CNN that he had three reasons why women shouldn’t be in combat.

“The first is, as we have already seen with the expansion of the roles of women, steady downward pressure on military qualifications — reductions in strength and endurance requirements in order to get numbers up,” he said.

“The second is the risk of harm to female personnel,” Frum continued. “The people we are likely to meet on the next battlefield are people who use rape and sexual abuse as actual tools of politics. In Iranian prisons, rape is a frequent practice. Women are raped before they are executed. In Iran, in Pakistan, in Afghanistan rape is a conscious tool of subjugation and it is something women will be exposed to. In the name of equal opportunity they will face unequal risk.”

1. Frum is a useless fraud.

And as for rape in the military, has he had his head up his.......never mind. The number of women who are raped by their own comrades is disgusting.

Right?

18. Perhaps he bought himself a Members Only jacket in camouflage back when Newt was babbling on

about male soldiers killing giraffes and women getting "infections" in the "foxholes." That made him feel like Rambo!

Newt's position, in essence, is "If it's kind of 'secretarial' it's 'ok' to let the gals have at it--otherwise, leave the work to the big tough guys..." (like him?)

I'm guessing Frum took this lesson to heart!

If combat means living in a ditch, females have biological problems staying in a ditch for thirty days because they get infections and they don't have upper body strength. I mean, some do, but they're relatively rare. On the other hand, men are basically little piglets, you drop them in the ditch, they roll around in it, doesn't matter, you know. These things are very real. On the other hand, if combat means being on an Aegis-class cruiser managing the computer controls for twelve ships and their rockets, a female may be again dramatically better than a male who gets very, very frustrated sitting in a chair all the time because males are biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes.

19. There are times when I just have a red palm print across my face

How about females make better fighter pilots due to their smaller frame, and lighter weight? (same for Jockeys and astronauts too, but we're not talking about them right now). and men never get any kind of infections, amirite?

5. It complicates the battlefield, doubles the amount of available cannon fodder

and enrolls women in the draft pool. Does that sound like a good thing for America?

8. It doesn't double the cannon fodder, it doubles the chances of a getting a good recruit.

And "complicating the battlefield"?! Women are already fighting and dying in the battlefield, they're just not getting any recognition for it. Once women stop being second class citizens in the military, it will be very good for the country. Female generals won't put up with the rape culture in the military.

21. It takes away one of the final impediments to passage of an Equal Rights Amendment.

That's only been making the rounds for the past hundred years or so...

Why should half our society be excluded from both the privileges and responsibilities of the society? It makes no sense.

7. I wish he'd just be honest.

“The people we are likely to meet on the next battlefield are people who use rape and sexual abuse as actual tools of politics - and so do we. In American prisons, rape is a frequent practice. In virtually all countries including the US, rape is a conscious tool of subjugation and it is something women will be exposed to. In the name of equal opportunity they will face unequal risk, and we do our part to maintain that culture.”

9. As long as the individuals can meet the same qualifications as required

It's stupid to put someone out there that might not be physically up to the task. If they meet the same quals as everyone else then have at it.

10. And male POWs are raped, Frum, in fact WE did it to male prisoners at Abu Graib.

Women and men are killed, tortured, raped and mutilated in war. That is why we should only go to war when we have NO other option. But when we do go to war, we need to go with the best recruits we can find. Many times, those happen to be women. They deserve to advance if they can do the job. The military is the last bastion of second class citizenship for women. It infects our military in terrible ways and promotes the rape culture. We need women in combat and we need women generals.

11. Wait, so female soldiers only get raped by the enemy?

Good to know. Now I'll sleep a lot better knowing that women in the military aren't subject to horrible levels of sexual abuse. Friendly fire, as it were.

Retch.

17. What a moron. This same claim was made when the job of MILITARY POSTAL CLERK

was made available to female recruits. "Waaah, waaaah, they won't be able to lift the MAIL BAGS! They'll be batting their little eyes and demanding that THE MEN do it! Waaah! We'll have to do their jerbs FOR 'em!!!! WAAAAH!"

It got so stupid that they put a strength/lift test in the AFEES (later MEPS) physical exam to any female recruit who had received a classification or designation to perform postal duties in uniform. IIRC, it was something like a fifty pound lift. I never met a female postal clerk who had trouble doing her job due to the "weight of the mail." It was one of those fake reasons that was designed as an excuse to deny, nothing more.

Frum ought to go ask Tammy Duckworth if that rocket that took off her legs had "second thoughts" because "Oh look--that's a girrrrrrrrrrrl flying that bird!!! She's too weak for combat, and not qualified! Let me turn my rocket ass around and go blow up something else!"

The moron ought to also speak with Rhonda Cornum, one of the servicemembers I most respect on this earth. She's a real hero who survived being abused as a prisoner of war with broken arms--puts his whining ass to shame. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhonda_Cornum Amazing human being as well as a real role model for all military personnel. Good conversationalist, too.

You do what your training teaches you to do. That goes for any servicemember and gender is not a factor in limitation.

I'd like to see this asswipe's military service resume--I imagine it started with a bucket of toy soldiers, and ended when his GI Joe slipped behind the radiator and melted one cold winter day.

Chickenhawk!!! Putz!
