Texas College Shooting Update: Carlton Berry, Lone Star College shooting suspect, charged

Source: CBS News

Police said a 22-year-old man was charged late Tuesday in the shootings at Lone Star College near Houston that left him and two others wounded.

A statement from the Harris County Sheriff's Office identified the shooting suspect as Carlton Berry. Spokesman Alan Bernstein said Berry is charged with aggravated assault but remains hospitalized with wounds suffered in the shooting.

Investigators say a fight between two people erupted in gunfire around noon on Tuesday at the community college that prompted a lockdown and eventual evacuation of the campus in north Houston. Three people were hospitalized, including a maintenance worker caught in the crossfire and two others who authorities believe were involved in the gunfire.

Bernstein said no other identities are available. The conditions of the other person involved in the shooting and maintenance worker were also unavailable.

Sounds like an urban gang fight rather than a gun nut.

1. Well, thank goodness it wasn't a "gun nut"

Taking "gun nut" as "nut with a gun", IMHO the term would be broadly inclusive of this variety of nut.

5. i dont care what you call it

Frikin guns were used in a public place and was the cause of collateral damage. What difference does it make if it's "urban" warfare, domestic violence or whatever reason? Guns were drawn on school grounds. Period.

6. I'm just glad no one was killed

And, I'm glad the cops had the restraint to take the perp alive. Now, we may see justice (instead of premature execution) and with the perp still alive, we may get to motive.

7. Texas Lawmakers Say More Guns Needed On Campus After Bystander Injured In College Shooting

By JIM VERTUNO
01/23/13 04:59 PM ET EST AP

... Sen. Brian Birdwell, R-Granbury, who filed the Campus Personal Protection Act last week, called the Lone Star College shooting a prime example for the need for his bill.

"It affirms what we know is true: When you disarm law-abiding citizens that we ought to trust, we make them defenseless," Birdwell said.

The prospects for the bill's passage are uncertain in a session that began Jan. 8 and runs until Memorial Day. So far, 14 senators, all Republicans, in the 31-member Senate have signed on in support of Birdwell's bill. But in 2011, the measure was backed by a large majority in the House and Senate and Gov. Rick Perry, a concealed handgun license holder, before dying without a final vote at the end of the session.

College administrators have generally not supported the bill in the past, saying they worry more guns will spark more campus violence and suicide. Supporters call it a critical self-defense measure and guns rights issue ...

8. GUN NUTS SHOOT EACH OTHER

They almost took each other out of the gene pool. How much of a gene pool is there in Texas???

It is time for more shooting action in the GOP states to prove that guns do not kill on a gun nut with a gun kills.....

9. Because all blacks are in gangs, and black on black gun crimes don't count, anyways.

Is that your point?

21. It certainly is a different dynamic than the high profile mass shootings

I don't know about the demographics, though I suppose that is an important factor in figuring out how to approach the problem, but this isn't someone shooting large numbers of random strangers. It is some kind of personal quarrel between people who know each other or have some sort of connection. And the shooter just had one gun. Perhaps that is what might make him "not a gun nut," since that label is given to people who have large collections of firearms with no rational reason for having them other than a desire for acquisition.

I think if we are going to solve the problem of guns we need to be unafraid to examine the tough issues.

29. True, Texas isn't known for gangs or gang related issues

It could have more to do with the personal experience of the person asking the question, since people draw on their own lives to try and make sense of things like this.

does color interfere with people seeing that?

are the other gunfighters not charged because they stood their ground?

does wayne lepetitpeepee not see this as the desired outcome in mutually assured destruction policy?

16. Why Didn't The Second Amendment Academy At That College Prevent This?

The kid who's in charge of the Second Amendment Academy issued a statement today; seems he's pissed that the shooting happened, because the campus is supposed to be a gun-free zone. Really. I'm not making this up.

19. 'Stupidity' led to Texas shooting, sheriff says

The exact subject of the argument that led to a shooting a Houston-area community college hadn't been determined Wednesday, but Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said he had a general idea of the cause.

"Idiocy. Stupidity," Garcia told reporters. "We had individuals who did not care about putting other people in harm's way. It was a ridiculous, adolescent confrontation that occurred. But if we can make an example out of anyone, we will."

23. IMHO

This is the perfect example of why everyone should NOT carry weapons. How many more arguments would end in shootings if the participants in every argument had guns?

25. So he broke multiple laws in a "gun-free" area

Probably concealed carry without a permit, possession of a firearm in a restricted zone, assault/attempted murder.

So how would more laws prevent things such as this when the criminals just ignore them? I guess it's something to charge them with after the fact.

I didn't see it any mention of it but likely a handgun, you know the type of firearm used in about 90% of our gun violence incidents but everyone is in a tizzy about the ones used <5% of the time.
