WASHINGTON (AP) House and Senate Democrats are trying again to renew the key federal program that protects women against domestic violence. They have agreed to remove one provision that sparked Republican opposition when the legislation faltered last year.
Democrats have taken out a section in the bill that passed the Senate last year that would have increased visas for immigrants who are the victims of domestic violence. House Republicans, who pushed through their own version of the bill last year, objected, and the two chambers were unable to reach a compromise.
The Violence Against Women Act became law in 1994 and was renewed in 2000 and 2005. But efforts to extend it again last year were unsuccessful as the Senate sought to expand protections for immigrants, Indians and gays.
