Barack Obama accused of giving partisan inauguration speech

Source: The Guardian

But before Obama had even left the church, the hard reality of Washington politics began to kick in.

Republican Congressman Pete King said Obama could at least have made an effort to reach out to Republicans. "I thought he could've found some way to be more constructive," King told CNN, adding: "You can still make a case but do it in a more magnanimous way."

Senator John McCain, Obama's presidential opponent in 2008, rounded on Obama, saying it was the eighth inauguration speech he had heard and the first in which a president had failed to reach out his hand to the opposition party.

Obama devoted much of his first inaugural speech in 2009 offering to work with the Republicans but spent most of the intervening years in bitter, debilitating fights with them that have frequently left Washington paralysed. Obama, frustrated by that and emboldened by his election victory, used his inaugural speech to underline his new combative approach, one in which he outlined a progressive agenda that he hoped to push through in spite of Republican opposition.

Conservative commentators joined Republican members of Congress in criticising Obama. Stephen Hayes at the Weekly Standard accused him seeking "to move the country even further left".

But on the same day after the Inauguration speech, 15 of the Rethuglicans met at a restaurant and decided to obstruct Obama's policies before even knowing what they were.

So why bother reaching out?

...and even worse, the U.S. and world economy was in a tailspin! The US lost over 700,000 jobs in January 2009 ALONE. We were circling the drain, and the Republicans decided to oppose Obama NO MATTER WHAT! If that ain't treason, we need to develop a new word for that level of callous partisanship.

Barry Goldwater getting spanked by 22 percentage points by LBJ in '64 is a landslide.

Winning by four percentage points isn't a landslide. The eight points in 2008 wasn't a landslide, either.

41. Measuring a presidential election by

percentage points of popular votes is like comparing two baseball teams by the number of hits each team hit. Sorry, the metric that counts is runs for baseball and electoral college votes in a presidential campaign. That Obama won by over 100 electoral college votes makes it a landslide.

53. Then it's less of a landslide...

than last time. Oh, and it's about on par with Jimmy Carter over a non-elected vice president with the largest scandal in US history (i.e.: the exact opposite of a landslide).

BTW, a "landslide" is Reagan '84 and Nixon '72, not the smallest margin of victory except W. in about 30 years or so.

55. If what counted in an election was the popular vote, without any question,

Al Gore won in 2000.

But, unfortunately, sometimes it is neither the popular vote nor the electoral vote but rather the Supremes' votes that count.

Republicans and their friends in Supreme places saddled us with that bitter, partisan loser George W. Bush for eight years.

Leave us alone please.

Barack Obama won fair and square. That's a huge improvement over his predecessor, baby Bush.

40. Sorry Peter King

there's no more reaching out to the GOP. The only thing anyone is going to offer the GOP is more rope to hang yourselves with. Obama needs and needed to reach out to the progressive base who he basically ignored, more or less, these past 4 years.

There's a saying, "Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer." True that, until the enemy makes it obvious with direct strikes. Then, you take out your enemies, not keep them closer.

look where it got us. Not this time. The polar caps will keep on melting faster and faster unless rapid change is undertaken. I have a *hunch* Obama's more likely to do something about that than if he were to reach out for the umpteenth time. Time's a-wastin' and the ice is a-meltin'. If the repubs don't like it, tough. It's for our collective good, even if they won't believe in what we know as reality and facts.
