Lautenberg Introduces Bill To Ban High-Capacity Magazines

Source: TPM

PEMA LEVY 12:36 PM EST, TUESDAY JANUARY 22, 2013

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced a bill Tuesday that would ban the sale and manufacture of ammunitions magazines that contain more than 10 rounds, Politico reports.

The limit on magazines would renew an element of the assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. Since then, it has become legal to produce and sell high-capacity magazines.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) introduced the bill in the House.

2. You seem not to know what "the point" is

Nobody is going to 3d print and assemble a magazine as a weapon of opportunity before going off on a shooting spree.

"The point" is to make it less easy. All sorts of things will remain possible.

3. the point is ... if a guy is determined enough to cause carnage ... then having a single barrier is

like having no barrier at all ..

so apart from banning high capacity magazines - you need to impose multiple barriers - ban on semi automatic guns, have waiting period before any guns can be purchased , universal background check incl private sales, registry of firearms, annual renewals, tax home storage of guns, limit on ammo puchases each month .. make them file ammo usage reports each month ( by mail)

Basically make life miserable for gun owners ... that will reduce demand and in turn reduce supply .. ie ..cause the industry to shrink the point that a lot of dealers will exit on their own ..

with reduced availbility ...a mass shooter will be forced to be really resourceful to act upon his evil plans.

4. "if a guy is determined enough"

However, many shootings are not the result of such determination, but are the result of impulse.

Absolutely, a determined person can 3D print a 30 round magazine. People line up at machine shops to make their own AR-15 lower receivers. These sorts of resourceful, determined, goal-oriented people, are not in general responsible for a lot of shooting deaths.

It is truly surprising to me how many gun dealers are hanging by such a shoestring that the only thing that keeps them profitable is the sale of 30 round magazines. But you apparently know a lot more about the market than I do.

5. honestly - I dont know squat about guns or gun markets

... or mass shooters for that matter ...

BUT I hate NRA with a passion and would like to shrink them to a size where I can drown them in a bath tub

6. Why use a bath tub?

In order to get a bathtub, you are going to need a building permit, plumbing inspection, and in some places a licensed plumber.

Just go get a gun, it's a lot less hassle than getting a bath tub.

9. The point is this is a start. And if this does not work, we will try something else.

These mindless killings that destroy the loved ones who remain have to end.

And whatever it takes has to be done. If the gun manufacturers, the NRA and gun owners acted responsibly, they would police the community of gun owners and the guns they produce so that we would have fewer if not zero of these killings.

This is step one. If it doesn't work, more drastic measures can be taken.

7. I hope this law also empowers cops to confiscate any noncompliant mags they find.

These insane mags need to be off our streets. The Aurora shooter had a 100-round mag for his AR. Who the hell needs that? Isn't that prima facie evidence that the person wanting that is insane and shouldn't have ANY guns, let alone a 100-round mag?!

8. This may or may not be a good idea but...?

Since the NRA wants strict adherence to the second Admendment, why not have the president declare that every gunowner is a member of the militia and regulate the hell out of them.

10. That may yet be the answer. Something has to give. We can't have all these killings.
