NRA stumbles in fight with Obama over gun-control proposals

Keene explained on NBC's "Today" show Thursday that the web ad “wasn't about the president's daughters” but was focused on “how to keep children safe.”

Matt Mackowiak, a Texas-based Republican consultant who has worked for a number of GOP policymakers, argued that the NRA remains a political powerhouse, but conceded the group has “performed in an uneven fashion” while under the intense spotlight that followed the Newtown shooting, a tragedy that renewed a debate over gun violence after a lone gunman killed 27 people, including 20 children.

“The NRA has succeeded at growing its membership during a time of perceived threat and stress,” Mackowiak said in an email, “but their initial response (the clumsy press conference) and the now-viral hypocrisy ad were both disappointing.”

Gun reformers, meanwhile, are hoping the NRA's aggressive messaging strategy this year will alienate the public and propel Obama's reform package through Congress.

Obama backers aim to outflank NRA on gun control (my bold. a measly $2000??? wtf?)

Activists have also identified a few Senate Republicans they hope to sway, including Mark Kirk of Illinois and Susan Collins of Maine. In the House, they're focused on 35 to 40 Republicans in suburban areas or districts carried by Obama, where voters might be more supportive of gun-control measures.

"We have a million grass-roots supporters who have sent almost 200,000 emails to Congress, tens of thousands of phone calls and are ready to go to town hall meetings and camp out if they have to," said Mark Glaze, director of the mayors group. He said of lawmakers: "In the end I'm confident that enough of them will look past the NRA's $2,000 contribution and do what the public is demanding."

4. I would advise never using that tactic (think of the children)

it has been used far too many times to push through terribly restrictive laws- on a whole boat load of issues.

2. Here is a serious question. How likely is a challege to a law banning

assault weapons at surviving a challenge before the high court purely based on constitutional arguments?
I give it a 20% chance of surviving such a challenge.

6. depends on how restrictive the ban is

I believe the 1994 ban would probably survive scrutiny.

I think NY's ban with its 7 round magazine limit will not.

on edit: the problem with this is that there is no uniform "assault weapons ban". Every statute is different- and some of those differences are very significant and have wide ranging effects. The example is the NY 7 round limit which essentially bans the majority of pistols out there. Compare that to the old 10 round limit in which very few pistols were banned

3. NRA = Not Really Astute

Guns are used to kill...kill anything that is alive.

Ya, ya...target practice...not.

7. Don't call for banning assault weapons

Call for banning a weapon with a short barrel.

This preserves the long rifles and shotguns used for hunting and removes the shorter high cyclic rate of fire urban warfare weapons.

Would a sniper use a short barrel AR-15/M-4 or equivelant?

No. There is a lack of accuracy at distance. So much for the hunting meme.
