Former Mexican intelligence chief accused of ‘dirty war’ disappearances of militants has died

MEXICO CITY — The man who led Mexico’s domestic spy agency and was accused of being behind the disappearances of alleged guerrillas in the 1970s has died at age 87.

Nazar Haro headed Mexico’s now-dissolved Federal Security Directorate from 1978 to 1982. That was at the height of the government’s “dirty war” against leftist insurgents.

Nazar Haro was arrested in 2004 and put under house arrest on charges tying him to the disappearances of six reputed guerrillas. A judge dismissed all charges in 2006.

Mexico’s government sought to crush small bands of guerrillas in the 1960s and ‘70s through torture and the killing of hundreds of radical leftists.
