New census record shows 1 in 2 people in America are now poor or low income
WASHINGTON -- Squeezed by rising living costs, a record number of Americans - nearly 1 in 2 - have fallen into poverty or are scraping by on earnings that classify them as low income.
The latest census data depict a middle class that's shrinking as unemployment stays high and the government's safety net frays. The new numbers follow years of stagnating wages for the middle class that have hurt millions of workers and families. "Safety net programs such as food stamps and tax credits kept poverty from rising even higher in 2010, but for many low-income families with work-related and medical expenses, they are considered too `rich' to qualify," said Sheldon Danziger, a University of Michigan public policy professor who specializes in poverty. "The reality is that prospects for the poor and the near poor are dismal," he said. "If Congress and the states make further cuts, we can expect the number of poor and low-income families to rise for the next several years." 13. It is a sign of the nature of our society

that we can live with the knowledge that 50% are poor while not being able to accept that some rich people would be unhappy if we addressed the issue effectively. Bizarro World makes more sense...

2. all 3 working adults in my household are poor
|
My son and sister make minimum wage 7.40, I make 12.. an hour and lucky if I get 30 hours a week. Some might say that we are lucky that we have jobs and I try to keep that in mind. When I start thinking about having myself a little pity party, I just remind myself that so many are far worse off.

6. The reason you're lucky is not your income. It's that your family are pooling their resources
|
Survival may be in the extended family now.
A one income family is more vulnerable in a sense, even if the salary is decent. I am the income earner in my family and my salary would be enough in normal times, but for the last few years it hasn't been enough. I wish you family good luck. I hope things improve for you. |

12. Well, lets see what they can do...
|
(Feel free to shoot at my numbers) Before one of them lost their job... Paid $45,000 for the year -15770 taxes - federal, sales, fees, etc. (35% or thereabouts, maybe a little less withPR tax cut) $29,230 left. -12,000 rent or house payment? (That's not really a nice house here, but it's not bad. Would likely need a 3 bed. They could get an apartment for slightly less, I think. ) $17,230 left -200 mo x 12 utils - $14,830 left -7200 ($600 mo food? Hey, that's $5 /day, better than the $4.33 they would get on the EBT card.) $7630 left. -3000 ($60/week gas for two cars, some bus riding when possible). $4630 left -630 insurance for cars $4000 left Any daycare and there won't be anything left. Better hope they got a sober relative, 'cause if they don't have someone it could cause a real problem with work, and paying standard rates is likely out of the question. Fees to banks, higher rent or house payment, etc, because their income is low or perhaps credit not perfect could add another $1000 to $2000 /yr in expenses. This assumes no pre-esixting debt, which is unrealistic, so there is a payment or two somewhere. Savings not gonna happen. Kids going to college? Maybe they get one of those $80,000 graduation presents at the end, a student loan they owe. Like a mortgage without a house. 'Course, without internet access at home the odds the kid is going to college probably aren't that great. They may not be poor, but they better hope one of the kids doesn't get a broken arm or mom doesn't have to go in the hospital for a few days, eh? Hey, we can help you with that, a nice little 21% APR credit card. If one gets laid off they could sell the other car, but that's not much. One can adjust the numbers for rent, taxes, but in our new no-growth-to-speak-of-for-the-next-20-years it's just a matter of time before they go further under. So what is low income. What of those things they pay for now would they not be able to afford to be "in poverty"? Just thinkin... |
