A handgun was found in the backpack of a 7-year-old boy at a New York City public elementary school on Thursday, triggering a brief lockdown amid heightened concern about gun violence in U.S. schools, officials said.

New York City Police Department spokesman John Grimpel said authorities are investigating how the unloaded .22-caliber handgun ended up in the child's backpack.

Police also found an ammunition clip and a flare gun in the bag belonging to the second-grade student, Grimpel said.

Officials locked down the Wave Preparatory Elementary School, located in Queens, for an hour, the New York City Education Department said.

Did the 7 year old steal his parents gun and sneak it into school or was he deliberately armed for self-defense?

3. He got it from a responsible gun owner.

Obtained legally, certainly. Does the 2nd Amendment not apply to kids??

5. This happens every day in schools in this country.

A dear friend was a principal in an alternative school - he took weapons away from students, including guns, nearly daily. And this was an elementary school.

I don't understand why one incident is getting so much attention.

6. If that is the case

all guns should be illegal because all gun owners are too stupid to not only have guns, they are too stupid to be parents.

8. Thankfully, nothing came of this but let me throw this out....

the school has armed guards and the child pulls out the weapon and is shot dead. Would the NRA be celebrating?

9. The NRA would say ..

The armed guards had to shoot the child to protect the other students.

My question is if any school hire armed guards what ate their regulations in the school. What are their detailed implementations of handling students with a gun? Parents of the school should ask these questions.

10. Shooting a 7 year old?

Some kids may know how to use a gun at that age but many don't. I don't think a guard would attempt to shoot a kid that young. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am. My daughter is 7. Most kids that age would have no clue what to do with a gun.
