Senate Democrats hold key to passage of gun legislation

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) -- Unlike most issues these days that divide along party lines, the immediate fate of President Obama's new gun proposals will depend not as much on Republicans as his fellow Democrats in the Senate.

Senate Democratic leadership sources tell CNN that passing any new legislation will be extremely difficult because more than a dozen vulnerable Democrats from conservative states will probably resist much of what the president is pushing.

These Democratic sources say the most likely legislation to pass will be strengthening background checks, since it is the least overt form of gun control and it also appeals to gun rights advocates' emphasis on keeping guns away from people with mental health and criminal problems.

Although Senate Democrats like Dianne Feinstein will still make a high-profile push to renew the assault weapons ban and limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, senior Democratic sources say it is hard to see those measures getting enough support to pass the Democratic-led Senate.

And that's just to pass the Senate. After that, it would need to pass the GOP-controlled House.

2. What they need is a show of force...

we need to organize a March on D.C. to show Congress that the people have the Presidents back on this.... Too many people think you just go to the polls and vote for your guy and thats all it takes but in reality we need a huge campagin style attack on this problem.

3. Not the right "people"

The cold reality of the situation is simply that you can't (well, I don't know where you live, but the point stands) vote for the Dem senators in pro-gun states, and make no mistake, there are a lot of them out there. Al Franken might get your undying respect if he votes for an AWB, but a fat lot of good that does YOU when THEY kick his ass out for voting against THEIR wishes.

4. but at least lets be honest

Nothing on the table short of a weapons ban is going to stop what happened in Sandy Hook from happening again. I think the country is at a croosroads it must make a choice whether it values weapons more than it does the sanctity of life, oh the hypocrisy of the prolife gunowner, how can they even life with themselves....
