Beck ‘historian’: History proves armed elementary kids prevent school shootings

Conservative host Glenn Beck and “historian” David Barton on Tuesday debuted a new show called “Foundations of Freedom” and suggested that history proved that school shootings could be prevented if all elementary school children were armed.

After pointing out that some areas of the United States required every household to own a gun in the late 1800s, Beck told Barton that “everybody grew up with a gun” and it was “part of school.” Barton noted that guns were only fired in schools at the time to stop criminal activity.

“The great example, in the 1850s you have a school teacher who’s teaching,” the historian explained. “A guy, he’s out in the West, this guy from New England wants to kill him and find him. So, he comes into the school with his gun to shoot the teacher, he decides not to shoot the teacher because all the kids pull their guns out and point it at him and say, ‘You kill the teacher, you die.’ He says, ‘Okay.’ The teacher lives. Real simple stuff.”

Barton added: “There was no shooting because all the kids — we’re talking in elementary school — all the kids pull their guns out and says, ‘We like our teacher, you shoot our teacher, we’ll kill you.’”

1. I was joking to my wife last night

that they would probably start talking about arming school kids. How could anybody take something like that seriously. Jaysus.

5. I can see it now....

Kids will be REQUIRED to tote a gun to school. Then some creative parents will sue the government because the weight of the gun is having adverse effects on their kids skeletal deelopment!

13. This is one organization out there that believes this story...

It's called The Republican Party.

These people will believe anything that people like Beck tell them. They're living at the intersection of Stupid and Delusional.

17. Yes

I helped some people move recently. We were a crew of about 10 guys. One of them, a guy about 40 years old, brought up Glenn Beck in a positive way.

Because of the religion most of these particular guys believe in (Mormon), I can assume they were mostly conservatives. But when he brought up Glenn Beck (who is also Mormon), the group fell silent, pretty much ignoring the guy.

So he tried to pin it on his wife. "She really loves Glenn Beck, I can't get her to shut up about him, heh heh..."

He finally dropped it once he realized not one person in this mostly-conservative, mostly-Mormon crowd wanted to hear a single word about Glenn Beck.

So yes, they believe it, but if they're smart they keep it to themselves.

7. Yo, Barton...

...cool story, bro.

And, such a good idea to arm all students! Because, students NEVER shoot their teachers or classmates, except when they do. But, that's a mere technicality.

Idiot. Moron. Dangerous tool. Dumbass. Ignoramus. Dirtbag. Scum. (feel free to add your own name for Mr. Barton)

12. Funny how Beck and Barton failed to mention this piece of history (from the link)

"Barton’s book, “The Jefferson Lies,” was pulled from stores by his publisher last year after it was criticized for grossly misrepresenting President Thomas Jefferson."

So, Beck's source is a historian who had his own book pulled by his publishers for inaccurately reporting history. This comedy of errors just writes itself at times.

20. ... David Barton’s Publisher Pulls Book On Jefferson (Aug 2012)

Casey Michel
August 17, 2012, 12:11 PM

... Thomas Nelson Publishers announced this month that it has ceased publication of The Jefferson Lies, Barton’s latest work.

Casey Francis Harrell, the director of corporate communications at the publishing firm, said that, due to a spate of recent complaints, Thomas Nelson had “lost confidence in the book’s details.” The Jefferson Lies, a New York Times bestseller, has been pulled from Thomas Nelson’s website, and the company has asked online retailers to cease offering the work to the public. The cessation came only two days after NPR’s “All Things Considered” ran a stinging commentary of Barton’s work ...

The book, which purports to illuminate Jefferson’s Christian leanings and the biblical influence on the Constitution’s creation, has been the subject of critique from much of academia since its release earlier this year, such that the History News Network deemed the book the “least credible book in print” ...

Among the most notable critics of Barton is Dr. Jay Richards, a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute and someone who’s spoken alongside Barton as recently as July. Richards noted that he’s grown uncomfortable with Barton’s work, citing “embarrassing factual errors, suspiciously selective quotes, and highly misleading claims” ...

They know what humanity is, respect it for what it is, and don't burden the individual citizen with a thousand unrealistic expectations.
The U.S. is truly the most self-deceived country in the world.

28. i know. my NJ brother loves Hannity

And spouts FOX News repeatedly. I have nothing to do with him. America still has a chance as long as there Americans who believe what DUrs believe in.

We up here watch the USA and are on guard that we are not assimilated. We said no to the American banking system. That did save us from a banking collapse that America had in 2008. We said no to the north american union.

We have gun restrictions. We have higher taxes but We have better health among all our citizens compared to America.
Canada is a good place to live. If you can do mining work I believe Canada could you take you as an immigrant. Learn French.

I would love to see progressive Americans come to Canada to stay, work and live.

then today. Glenn Beck has never been that bright though.

25. Yeah I believe this 'cause David Barton is such

a fabulous historian He is so bad that if he told me that the Declaration of Independence had been signed in Philadelphia, I'd double-check it. I wish I didn't believe these people arguing for arming elementary school children were serious, however, sadly, I know they are as serious as a heart attack. And giving guns to kids would be as deadly as one too. Do none of them have young children around that they can take a look at and realize how, well, young they are? No elementary school-aged child has the intelligence and experience to tote a loaded gun around and hope to use it in that once-in-a-lifetime experience it might be needed and might, just might, save a life properly. Heck I question giving guns to 17 and 18 year old military recruits, but that's a whole other matter. I want to see where Barton got this piece of stupidity - I wouldn't bet against it being a Zane Grey novel.
