Source: AFP

CAIRO At least 22 people were killed on Wednesday when a 12-storey building collapsed in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria, the health ministry said.

Another 11 people were injured, deputy health minister Mohammed al-Sharkawi told AFP.

1. So many buildings in Egypt are in poor condition. They were built under Nasser

and their maintenance was cut off when those government owned buildings were 'privatized' by Sadat. Many here would call Nasser a socialist and Sadat a capitalist. But the landlords in Egypt have let the buildings fall into disrepair and I thought Alexandria was pretty ugly except for the tourist strip by the sea.

2. Sadly ironic that the people who built monuments to last thousands of years can't build decent

buildings for homes.
