Now it's the debt, politicians and the economy, stupid

Americans are growing increasingly worried about federal debt and government dysfunction, which economists say could be a sign they are afraid that squabbles about the fiscal cliff and the debt ceiling could derail the nation’s fragile economic recovery.

"I would guess that the real concern is that if Congress screws things up with the fiscal cliff … and then coming up with the debt ceiling, that it will hurt the economy," said Justin Wolfers, a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan.

The economy in general still tops the list of the biggest problems facing America today, with 21 percent listing it as the biggest issue, according to a Gallup poll released this week.

But the poll conducted in early January found that nearly as many people – 20 percent – listed the federal deficit as the top problem facing the country. The percentage of people listing the deficit as the biggest U.S. problem has grown sharply in recent months, while the percentage of people naming the economy in general has fallen.

1. Americans..so easily propagandized...

When the rethugs are in office, the deficit is "no big deal", of course the MSM doesn't report that when a D is in office..."Our" deficit can be reduced with real progressive taxation (a wealth tax would be appropriate also) and by cutting our insane "defense" spending.
Our economy, OTOH, can only be fixed by programs designed to put people back to work. Rebuilding our infrastructure, at least to the level of other developed nations will cost money. If we use green technology, our future costs will be significantly lower.
Ending unfair "free trade" practices would result in a resurgence of our (much needed) manufacturing base. Of course, forcing living wages (instead of the money flowing to the wealthy) for workers has to be a part of the solution.
Without raising the deficit, the only recourse is more austerity for workers and the disabled. I hope that americans have had enough of this and are fed up with our wealth distribution where about 5% of increased wealth actually trickles down to the people.
We have become chattel in a feudal system. The deficit can be erased, of course it will take expenditures and increased revenue.
