Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to leave cabinet position in March

Source: Denver Post

WASHINGTON ó Interior Secretary Ken Salazar will step down from his cabinet position in the Obama administration and return to Colorado to spend time with his family, his office has confirmed to The Denver Post.

Salazar is expected to broadly announce his departure Wednesday. He has told President Barack Obama that he intends to leave his job by the end of March.

Salazar, 57, will have served a little more than four years in Obama's cabinet after being plucked from his beloved U.S. Senate seat serving Colorado in 2008.

His decision on whether to stay on at the helm of Interior or return to Colorado ó and likely the less-glamorous but more-lucrative private sector ó has been weighing on Salazar for a long time.

1. It would be awesome

if Obama appointed someone who actually cared about the environment and especially the Arctic. That offshore drilling up here is a terrible idea.

3. Good...

We need someone who isn't afraid to go against the fools who want to put greed over the best interests of this land and it's resources. Someone who has the capacity to understand how important the environment is and the reasons to protect it. Without fresh air and water, there is NO life. No plants, No animals, NO people!

8. Whilst I am very, VERY glad to see the back of this wolf-killing rancher, i am concerned...

..about who his replacement might be....I am NOT encouraged that it will be anyone that is measurably less bad than he has been...

10. We have been asking the WH- New Head of the Dept of the Interior be Raul Grijalva

He has compassion for wildlife, excellent history and will be a good steward for Americas public lands.

So very happy Salazar is getting out. We have hated Salazar the Slaughter Tzar for many years, he's a black hearted man.

Statement by the President on Interior Secretary Ken Salazarís Announcement that He Will Return to Colorado

I want to thank Ken for his hard work and leadership on behalf of the American people. As the Secretary of the Interior, Ken has helped usher in a new era of conservation for our nationís land, water, and wildlife. Ken has played an integral role in my Administrationís successful efforts to expand responsible development of our nationís domestic energy resources. In his work to promote renewable energy projects on our public lands and increase the development of oil and gas production, Ken has ensured that the Departmentís decisions are driven by the best science and promote the highest safety standards. Ken has also made historic strides in strengthening our nation to nation relationship with Indian Country, helping to resolve longstanding disputes and make tribal communities safer and stronger. I have valued Kenís friendship since we both entered the Senate in 2005, and I look forward to receiving his counsel even after he returns to his home state of Colorado.
