Police in St. Louis say a part-time student entered the Stevens Institute of Business & Arts this afternoon and promptly shot a longtime administrator in the chest before turning the handgun on himself.
The victim, in his 40s, is said to be one of the college's financial advisors.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson would not release the name of the suspect, but said he was a 21-year-old male who had been a student at the school off and on for the past four years.

"The victim and the shooter were familiar with each other," Dotson told reporters. "They knew each other. This did not appear to be random. It appeared to be targeted."

The two were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing surgery.

Just another senseless gun death, nothing to see here folks. Too bad he wasn't armed with a hammer.

1. There's a hopelessness among our young people.

This sounds personal.

Had it not been a gun, it might have been a knife.

2. You're right, may the knife ban prevented him from being able to stab the guy.

4. It might have been, but there is also a good chance the attack would not have happened without a gun

The fact is it is far easier to kill someone with a gun than it is to kill them with a knife, knives require a person to get in close range which puts the victim in a much better position to defend themselves. Because knives are not as easy to kill with as guns are there is a smaller chance of a fatal attack, and because it is more difficult to pull off a would be attacker might be less likely to make the attempt in the first place because they do not have confidence that they can pull it off.

3. I wouldn't call it a gun death quite yet

Hopefully not ever.
