Bob Schieffer Grills John McCain: Why Is The GOP ‘Against Every Single Person’ Obama Nominates?

Source: www.mediaite.com

Face The Nation host Bob Schieffer grilled Republican Senator John McCain Sunday on why the GOP seems “to be against every single person” that President Obama has nominated to his cabinet. Schieffer said he “couldn’t remember a time” when the opposing party has had a problem with each of the president’s nominations. “It’s usually been the rule if the president is going to be in charge of the government, we have to give him the people he wants to run it,” he added.

McCain noted that Hagel was “a friend” but claimed that usually with this process, “the previous presidents” would “call the other side” when considering a nomination and say “what do you think about it.” He added that it didn’t matter if the presidents were Republican or Democrat, it had often been done before. “There’s been none of that with this administration,” he said.

So McCain is complaining that the administration in being inflexible. They really seem to live in their own little reality bubble do they not? Or is it only okay to obstruct EVERYTHING if the president is a democrat? The game has truly changed.

Same thing. Obama 'floated' Susan Rice as a possible, and they crucified her. He 'floated' Hagel and they have not stopped screaming and saying how "disappointed" they are.

"There's been none of that"? Johnny, stop lying.

not trustworthy for the Pres. to discuss the most important things in advance with. McCain would run to his republican groups to help obstruct Obama. President Obama has appointed Republicans and has Republican friends like General Powell, he said they speak frequently. None of those Republicans are jerks like McCain.

64. McCain doesn't work in the White House.

He works in Congress which consists of the Capitol and two sets of office buildings, one for the Senate and one for the House.

It is a fairly long walk between the Congressional buildings and the White House, especially in the hot, humid DC summers.

From someone who lives in the DC area and once worked in one of the Congressional buildings and once worked fairly near the White House.

71. Look how well this worked out for the GOP last time!

The bureau will be in fine hands—if Cordray can win confirmation (see below). But did Obama concede too much by eschewing Warren for the post? It was clear she wanted the position. But Warren knew that she was a lightning rod for the GOP, and that Republican senators would fight her nomination as if the fate of the world depended upon de-Warrenizing the CFPB. In May, 44 senators signed a letter asserting they would block any CFPB director unless the administration would agree to changes that would weaken the independent office. They may well stick to that vow when it comes to Cordray, but he will certainly have an easier go of it than Warren would have. And the bureau, per the law that created it, will not assume key authorities until it has a director. Consequently, avoiding a battle royal over a director, if possible, will yield a real benefit.

Fans of Warren had raised the possibility of a recess appointment for her. In response, congressional Republicans have prevented Congress from officially going into recess—even during scheduled breaks—to block the president from deploying this option. Some bloggers and others have suggested that there is a way the White House still could use a recess appointment for Warren, yet White House lawyers and Warren herself had concluded that while such an action was theoretically possible, it would require an unprecedented maneuver. Within the White House, there wasn't much appetite for fighting over whether a recess appointment might be legal if congressional Republicans didn't convene a recess. Yet if the Republicans do carry out their threat to block any nomination, the White House might eventually have to resort to this course.

For months, Warren has known that it was unlikely that she would be tapped to run the agency she created. But given that some possible appointees floated for the job hardly shared Warren's vision or populist fervor—such as former Rep. Melissa Bean (D-Ill.), a Wall Street favorite—Cordray is a fine consolation prize for Warren, and for consumers. And she herself may end up with her own consolation prize.

SNIP:

At the moment it does appear as if Republican extremists have once again succeeded in defying Obama and have scored a win for Wall Street against the forces of progressive populism. But there may be more to this fight, much more—should Warren decide she'd like a particular job in another branch of the federal government.

The "Republican Obstructionist Party" just lost again. They beat Warren down, and they lost. They just helped build a bigger and better and stonger person. Her name is Elizabeth Warren. My/our Senator from Mass.

They helped build that, God Bless Them! Hell hath no fury...

They created their own Worst Nightmare! Oh yeah, They are going to pay!

Here's to Senator Warren!

If, indeed, other presidents really called "the other side", as he claims, then why bother having any hearings votes on the nominees? They are already "pre-approved" by that logic. I don't buy that for one nanosecond. And, besides, he and his fellow assholes have long been telling the president what they think, without giving the guy a chance to solicit their opinions. Why should he call you for your opinion, when you are already out there spewing it in front of every reporter or TV network that is willing to give you attention?

considering that ilk like Faux Snooze didn't even exist during Clinton's first term.

With the proliferation of the RW noise machine across the airways during and since Clinton's 2nd term, the RW facist extreme fringe has exploded exponentially, and is magnified beyond any seen in the past. And this avalanche of hate has been heaped upon this current President and his family. And what has made it worse is that the extremists were elected to office.

And did you miss my initial post in reference to Schieffer's lame question and my pointing out the virulent racism carried out by both elected officials and the media against this President? Citing such (despite others who say the same in this thread) caused the race deniers to surface and require a reminder.

There is no comparison. This President not only has faced the run of the mill crap that previous Democratic Presidents have faced but he has also faced a nasty racist overlay on top of that. Clinton doesn't come close.

83. If the Nominees before Reno had just hired LEGAL nannies, no problem

The problem was all of them hired NOT documented and illegal immigrants to be their children nanny. It was their choice to save some money when they were young and just out of law school, but as Patricia Schroeder said at the time, if you plan to go into politics, including working to be appointed to a Cabinet position, you have to spend the money to be above reproach, i.e. Patricia Schroeder admitted she had the same temptation to hire an illegal immigrant as a nanny, for she would have saved a lot of money, but she had political ambitions and that mean she had to keep herself lilly white.

The problem with Clinton's first choices for Attorney General is both of them had hired illegal aliens as nannys, and such nominees must be as clean as possible and due to who they hired AND how those nannies where paid (And that both nominees had substantial income so such payment was NOT a severe hardship) was the problem. If you go into politics, pay what is needed to stay as clean as possible.

It doesn't get any bullshittier than that. It was an outright witch hunt. The rethugs had the FBI pawing through Hillary's underwear drawer looking for "evidence" of wrong-doing, even though they had absolutely no proof she or her husband did anything wrong. And, it was all driven by most of the same loons in Congress that are causing shit for the Obamas. The same hate was there that is here now. Yeah, Fox News wasn't as prevalent then, but Rush Limbaugh and his talk radio ilk more than made up for it. The airwaves were saturated with that shit. Limbaugh even had his own TV show there for a while.

48. And we are just starting Obama's 2nd term

And you think they are not going to try to impeach him between now and 2014 since they still control the House?

They have already tried 2 trumped up witch hunts ("Fast and Furious" and "Benghazi") and they are wringing their hands in anticipation when it comes time to raise the debt ceiling.

And as FYI, I heard Limpballs' very first show back in 1988 on WABC in NYC and listened to him on and off since. Most of his schtick was black-bashing using parody songs and commercials insulting Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton for those 4 years leading up to when Clinton came into office, and only THEN did he throw the Clinton-Janet Reno-Chelsea bullshit in for good measure. And Monica Lewinsky was Matt Sludge's "introduction to the world" but now he's gone full blown lunatic with the birther crap.

There were no billionaire-funded astroturf tea-crazies with the media shoving microphones and tv cameras in their face during Clinton nor were there any $2 billion dollar election campaign seasons either.

The whole thing got magnified under this President, their supremacist heads continue to explode, and it is a disgrace that we have to sit through it hoping that sanity will finally prevail and normal people with reasonable disagreements, can go about the business of governing.

57. This shit happened in Clinton's first term, as well.

"Fast and Furious" and "Benghazi" are child's play compared to what went on with Whitewater. And, that started during his first term They can wring their hands all they want regarding the debt ceiling, as well. They aren't going to get their way.

And, FYI, I am well aware of what Limbaugh spewed in 1988. He, Drudge, and the rest were already "full blown lunatics". See: Vince Foster, Mena Airport, etc. Hell, they tried to blame him for the Ruby Ridge incident, which happened under Poopy Bush. And, yes, there were billionaire-funded crazies going after the Clintons. Does the name Richard Mellon Sciafe ring a bell?

Again, for the upteenth time, I agree that there is an added layer of racism this time around. But, the rest of the assholery was just about as bad for Bill Clinton. Sheesh,

Bob Barr was a nutjob, without doubt. But to set the historical record straight, he first introduced an impeachment resolution against President Clinton on November 5, 1997 -- ten months after President Clinton's Second Inauguration. It would have been very difficult for Barr to have introduced an impeachment resolution against President Clinton in 1993 since Barr wasn't first elected to Congress until November 1994.

91. It's happened every time we've had a Democratic President

The first Democratic President I can remember (though LBJ was POTUS when I was born) was Jimmy Carter, and I was 10 when he was elected. I don't think he got the rash of shit that either Bill Clinton or Barack Obama have gotten from the Republicans.

Of course, he followed an old-style moderate Republican, Jerry Ford. The Republicans also didn't have the media machine (Limbaugh, Hannity, Fux Noise, Coulter, Savage, Levin) that they do now.

Bill Clinton? Almost from the word "go," it was "take this guy and his agenda down." They succeeded on health care, but I have to say that Mr. Clinton rolled over and let them kick him on that one...and then we ended up with the Era of Newt that we have not recovered from yet.

Barack Obama? Really no different from what they did to Mr. Clinton except for the ugly, racial tinges to it. The "birthers" have got to be the worst troglodytes I've yet seen the GOP produce.

During both the Clinton and Obama Administrations these goofy wannabe "militias" raised their ugly head...but they were quite content with Bush II.

It seems to me that ever since 20 January 1981 the far right of the GOP (which is the GOP now) have believed that the Presidency is somehow theirs by divine right...Reagan handed off to Bush I, who was supposed to have two terms (perish the thought that voters in 1992 thought otherwise!!!), hand off to Dan Quayle (that scares the hell out of me to even think of - I grew up in northern Indiana not far from where he was from and remember him as a Senator; I couldn't believe Bush Senior picked him as VP), etc. etc.

When it didn't work out that way, they got real mad, kind of like a two-year-old...and they're still doing it.

Last edited Sun Jan 13, 2013, 06:15 PM - Edit history (1)

All of the "previous presidents" were part of the "good ole boys network"- except this Black one- who is "different" according to some of the first four years of name-calling and RACE-BAITING when alluding to the President.

How dare anyone who LOST, LOST, and LOST big expect to get any consideration for anything. Not that I believe this mccain sack of bullspit anyway- it doesn't matter whom the President selects for nomination. The repugnants will all oppose any one, so wtf!

The President has the right to select anyone HE wants- not who the "good ole boys" want. That seems to defeat the purpose anyway. I don't blame the President for telling mccain and the rest to go to HELL pronto.

That has been on display for a long, long time. Not even a "band of brothers" connection can overcome the huge ego problem. So why do the networks have McCain on every single weekend of the year since he brings nothing positive to the table? It looks like all the networks ever want is bad mouth, bad mouth, bad mouth and McCain offers that up without hesitation.

taken on a sense of entitlement to running the government. Their lust for power now supercedes any concern they once had for making this country actually work. It's so blatantly obvious at this point to anyone with a shred of objectivity. But republicans are just blinded by their ideology and cannot see the damage they are doing.

Reallly John McCain? Obama is the one not reaching out? You insult our intelligence with such hypocrisy.

I'm so sick of hearing republican talking points that have no basis in reality getting air time in the news. They've grown so accustomed to not being challenged that they are getting sloppy. Now if we could only get real journalists to cover the news.

The nominees are currently making the senatorial rounds talking and answering questions, prior to the various committees that will hold open and broadcast Q&A sessions prior to a vote. That's plenty of time and opportunity for you and all the other Senators to decide how to vote.

I'm sorry that you're feelings and dignity and sense of self-importance seem to be continually in a state of outrage that you're not POTUS. Actually, you really aren't very important any more. on a Democratic diplomatic nominee when he was in the Senate. Those who criticize McCain for attacking Rice while defending Hagel, just another Republican with a history of such attacks have some contradictory facets to their assertions. McCain was a racist jerk in his attacks, but Hagel was 10X the virulent bigot, using open and clear hate speech against an individual and the entire minority of which the individual is a member.
They both practice the politics of personal destruction.

I'd see about skipping that process because it's a NOMINATION and not an EDICT. A Nomination is a suggestion for consideration. They are supposed to consider and either vote aye or nay. A phone call would kind of negate the need for open forum, right?

"Hey, what do you think of this person?"

"No."

"Okay, this person or this person?"

"No, and possibly."

Could this conversation be an abridged version of the hearings or the actual freaking phone call? No difference!

Do it in open forum, stop whining because you lost the 2008 election, and let the Government run!

If they thought it had no influence do you think they would be wasting any time on such?

Another thing it does is give the a lot of politicians on both sides cover for the things that would be radical right wing a decade or so to being applicable in today's political climate. We settle because of the threat we might get worse down the road if we don't settle and agree. The corporations are just practicing divide and conquer using politicians as the conduit
