GARDENDALE | A prominent Alabama pastor fatally shot his wife and wounded their 18-year-old daughter in their church-owned home before grabbing a kitchen knife and trying to stab himself to death, police said Friday.

The Rev. Terry Greer, 54, is being charged with murder in the slaying of 52-year-old Lisa Greer and attempted murder in the wounding of Suzanna Greer, a University of South Alabama student, according to police in Gardendale, a suburb about 10 miles north of Birmingham.

Greer is senior pastor at Gardendale-Mount Vernon United Methodist Church near Birmingham. Prominent in Methodist circles in the area, he leads a church with an average Sunday attendance of about 670.

After Greer opened fire on his wife and daughter Thursday, the teenager grabbed the gun and ran to a neighbor’s house to alert authorities, police said.

1. Amazing that the daughter was able to disarm him

Must suck if you want to do a murder suicide and someone takes your gun before you can complete the second half.

4. That's why I say, "Look out for Number One."

If you're gonna do a murder-suicide, be sure you're first on the hit list.

2. Only way to stop a bad preacher with a gun

is with a good preacher with a gun, at least that's what the NRA told me. I'm having a little trouble on this one though, how do we handle the goods guys with guns who become bad guys with a gun? We need like a moderate guy with a gun?

13. Another answer is armed guards in churches?

Well, guess that would not have helped here. Come to think on it, don't really see how armed guards in schools are going to help much either.

That's my guv - who wanted to be your president (after he said he was only kidding about having Texas secede from the USA) - to the left in this picture.

Another responsible gun-owner.

11. Was taking an antidepressant

That's the hate-radio talk I heard yesterday...blame it all on antidepressants made by pharmaceutical companies that the liberal are protecting...I swear that's what was being said.

Sounds like a win-win situation.

Or something like that. After all, what if she was attacked by four preachers with guns? Then what?

9. He lived, so will they invite him to pray at the Inaugural? He's a 'minister' and all that.

Another example of the violence and hate that flows out of the 'church' and lives in the bones of the clerics of that church.

It's obvious that if this had truly been a God-filled home the tragedy would not have happened.

24. there's so much more to this story ...

It's not what they're talking about it as much as what they're hiding ... sounds like he wanted to silence his family so they couldn't tell on him ...

:The reverend has been on medical leave since experiencing heart problems and a car accident in autumn, and details on what may have led up to the violence were not immediately available."

"A worship leader at Greer’s church was recently arrested on charges of soliciting a child for sex and traveling to have sex with a child, but Walker said there did not appear to be any link between that case and the shootings."

30. If this is correct, he was probably legally on some heavy meds or withdrawing/cutting down...

no good solutions here other than the obvious...he was infinitely less dangerous with just a knife. Another deadly notch on our country's proverbial belt.

And unfortunately the mental health issue is a non-starter. No one can be declared mentally incompetent (not related to an illegal act) without expensive legal proceedings...so no "mental health background check" will work. Now, he will be deprived of his gun legally. For some, too little, too late. Sad to say.
