(Reuters) - French military helicopters attacked a base belonging to al Shabaab insurgents in southern Somalia to rescue a French secret agent held hostage since 2009, a rebel spokesman said on Saturday.

French officials were not immediately available to comment on reports of the raid, in which a Somali government official said at least two people were killed.

The official for al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab said one of the French commandos had been killed by anti-aircraft fire from the rebels.

The government official in Bula Mareer, about 120 km (75 miles) south of Mogadishu, said the helicopters attacked on early on Saturday and were believed to have been on a mission to rescue Denis Allex. He did not confirm which country the helicopters belonged to.

French secret service hostage and soldiers killed in Somali rescue mission.

A French hostage and two French soldiers have been killed during a failed secret service rescue mission in Somalia.

The failure of the overnight helicopter raid in the southern town of Bulo Marer, about 70 miles south of Mogadishu, came as the French military continued a separate African operation in Mali.

The French defence ministry said the hostage was a member of the secret service, the General Directorate for External Security (DGSE), which directed the operation.

The ministry said the agent, known by his pseudonym Denis Allex, was killed by his captors, members of the Islamist group al-Shabaab, who mounted stiff resistance to the French forces' operation. Seventeen fighters from the group, which had held Allex hostage for three years, were also killed.

1. continued surge of French militarism in Africa and elsewhere

The so-called Socialist gov't in Paris is continuing the neo-revanchist tendencies of the Sarkozy regime at both ends of the continent. The arrogance and aggression of this current group seems matches that of its predecessor--does anybody remember when liberals tricked themselves into believing that France was a strong anti-war pillar against to Bush-era aggressions? Obviously they are not acting alone in these activities, and their policies coincide with American and English hostile predations, but to what lengths will follow with this present surge of American/European hostility in Africa and the Middle East? I don't think Russia would ever be permitted to blast its way in to France to recapture an arrested spy (not without a nuclear response, anyway), but that kind of behavior is just considered acceptable against other forces when the matter is reversed.

(Reuters) - A French intelligence officer held hostage in Somalia since 2009 was killed along with at least one other soldier during a botched rescue attempt by French troops on Friday night, the French Defence Ministry said on Saturday.

But the Harakat Al-Shabaab Al-Mujahideen insurgent group who were holding Denis Allex said in a statement that he was still alive and being held at a location far from the base where French military helicopters attacked overnight.

3. How did somali rebels come to

have a French spy in their custody in the first place and have him since 2009 and not allow him to return to France?

4. Let's turn that question around: What was a French spy doing in Somalia?

Spies get caught sometimes.
