A Taft, Calif., school teacher and a campus supervisor talked a shooter into surrender on Thursday, the AP reports. At least two people were shot and the suspect is reportedly in custody.
Authorities described the shooter as a 16-year-old student who attended the high school. He was armed with a 12 gauge shotgun.

(3,286 posts)...to include the shooter, described by his tutor as "like a genius". Smart enough to vent his rage at a specific target that he saw as a personal threat. Unfortunately, living in a culture that celebrates "bullying" and promotes religiously the number one tool of the bully, a firearm, the only rational response was within easy reach.
And how fortuitous that the schools 'armed guard' who would have undoubtedly ended it all 'differently', was absent because of freak weather.
All around good work to further the discussion....

He in fact told the teacher, 'I don't want to shoot you,' and named the person that he wanted to shoot," Youngblood said.
Trish Montes, who lived next door to the suspect, said he was "a short guy" and "small" who was teased about his stature by many, including the victim.
"Maybe people will learn not to bully people," Montes said. "I hate to be crappy about it, but that kid was bullying him."
Montes said her son had worked at the school and tutored the boy last year, sometimes walking with him between classes because he felt sorry for him.
"All I ever heard about him was good things from my son," Montes said. "He wasn't Mr. Popularity, but he was a smart kid. It's a shame. My kid said he was like a genius. It's a shame because he could have made something of himself."

(23,272 posts)Sorry my sadness factor at the shitty deal these teachers have been getting for the past few years, and now they have to face this kind of horrifying scenario just makes my heart ache.
Those poor teachers. The poor kids.
What a mess.

I want to bow down to the teachers in Taft. Such an example of compassion and reason and people skills saving the day. I wish I had such skills.
Hope the injured student recovers fully.
Seriously, a teacher in every gun shop, teaching about the dangers of guns in the home. NRA funded, of course. We need to make it happen, for realz.

(35,932 posts)Since they are also doing the principals' job of keeping the public's children safe and secure.
Better yet, make every PRINCIPAL do overtime at gun shops and shows. That would be the more appropriate change of duties, and would better justify their salaries. They need to stop making excuses to the public about their entry and ID security systems.

(33,982 posts)And clearly he stopped firing, electively. The teacher was able to talk him out of it, which means he stopped firing, period.
Shotguns are extremely lethal when used with lethal intent and some level of competence. It appears that in this case, we got lucky that 'his heart wasn't in it', so to speak.

Oy.
Very gutsy, and I am so glad for all that it worked.
A friend of mine once held an intruder with her voice alone while she called the Sheriff. "Sit! Right! There!" Now, I am not recommending this for the average person, male or female, but occasionally this kind of thing can work -- especially if the intruder is not carrying something that sprays bullets multiple times a second.
Just sayin.'

(14,337 posts)Just like Columbine. They could just hide a gun in a backpack or under a long coat and who would know? It's not like an armed stranger shooting their way in like Sandy Hook.
Metal detectors might be a solution to this, but most people don't like that idea at all.
