GM to hire 1,000 at new Atlanta IT center

Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution

General Motors said Thursday it will hire about 1,000 high-skilled IT workers at a new $26 million technology development center in metro Atlanta.

The operation, which will be in a sprawling Roswell facility once used by UPS, is already beginning to hire software developers and database managers who design the technical infrastructure that supports other global GM businesses.

State officials used about $20 million in incentives to seal the agreement, which was about eight months in the making. That included about $17.5 million in job tax credits and another roughly $2 million from the stateís closing fund. The AJC first reported the deal was completed in December.

The Roswell center will be one of four that GM is opening around the country as it shifts its IT operations in-house. Randy Mott, GMís chief information officer, said the company chose metro Atlanta because of the regionís deep talent pool, itís geographic advantages and quality of living.

1. Ugh, Roswell -- nowhere near the MARTA train line.

Still, it's 1,000 jobs, so that's good for those who live in or are willing to drive to the northern Atlanta suburbs.

5. I'd drive to Roswell.

I live in Woodstock, and Roswell is not that far from me. But I stand a slim chance of being hired because of my age.

11. Also good news for the local economy around that office.

They'll have a mini-boom, mostly in service-type jobs, but every little bit helps

10. I remember when this was announced a year ago.

I told my conservative parents about it and they didn't believe it. Faux tells them that nobody is hiring and that America is a shithole.
