Opponents Play The Hitler Card On Gun Control, Supporters Say Itís Not Gonna Work This Time

Source: TPM

On Wednesday, the Drudge Report splashed an image of Hitler and Josef Stalin over a link to Vice President Bidenís contention that the White House may consider using its executive power if Congress proves unable to act.

Bidenís statement is old news, as is the suggestion from Drudge that President Obama is intending to act in the manner of histories most notorious dictators. Bumper stickers like this one have been kicking around the anti-gun control community since well before the ďfrom my cold, dead handsĒ era.

The White House declined to comment on the Drudge image, or the general comparison to Hitlerís regime that have popped up in anti-gun control corners since Obama began his push for new legislation. Most politicians who have talked openly about gun control have had the Hitler quotes thrown at them, and thereís a lot of reporting suggesting the most oft-repeated of these Hitler quotes are not in fact Hitler quotes. As for the underlying theory, that gun control hastened Hitler to power and helped facilitate the Holocaust ó and that thereís a lesson in that for America ó Tabletís Michael Moynihan took a long look at that question last month.

ďAmerica isnít Nazi Germany, and it cheapens the experience of Holocaust victims to suggest otherwise,Ē he concluded. ďBy all means, let the debate on gun control roil, but for once, letís leave Hitler out of it.Ē

1. I guess they're not familiar with the "Hitler Rule."

First one to compare anybody or anything to Hitler automatically LOSES the argument. (Appeals for exceptions to the Hitler rule are generally unsuccessful.)

17. You are referring to a corollary of...

...Godwin's Law. Godwin's Law is actually this:
"As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."

The presumed hyperbole involved lessens the credibility of the person making the argument.

I am not sure what effect it has on people like Alex Jones who are already at zero.

4. Comparisons of GWB to Hitler were rife, and rarely challenged.

Various posters here on DU would breathlessly announce that concentration camps were being built to confine the political opposition.

And now people are surprised that Freepers are saying the same kinds of things about President Obama?

6. Calling a spade a spade is perfectly fine

When the shoe fits (or is thrown), wear it. GWB wasn't so much like Hitler. He was a pawn of the person who best embodied Hitler: Cheney. They made an excuse to get into a war, much like what Hitler did. They had secret domestic spying, much like what Hitler did. They demanded party loyalty over country, much like what Hitler and the Nazis required. They were arrogant and bombastic towards their allies and neighbors, much like Hitler and the Nazis. They were very much for the fascist form of economic system, much like Hitler's plans.

I give Hitler props for having way more mod styling uniforms.

8. Sorry, but I believe that equating Bush (or Cheney) to Hitler does a disservice to the

60 million people who died in WWII.

13. Agree.

It's total nonsense, and, as you said, an insult to all the people who were encamped, bombed, killed or wounded in the war.

14. Comparison made by well-respected, popular left-leaning blog...?

"Comparisons of GWB to Hitler were rife, and rarely challenged..."

Comparison made by well-respected, popular left-leaning blogs read by mainstream DC beltway, or simply individuals posting on a board?

Seems to me to be a relevant and precise difference.

9. Odd, given the history of the "assault rifle"

Definition

The term assault rifle is a translation of the German word Sturmgewehr (literally "storm rifle", "storm" as in "military attack"). The name was coined by Adolf Hitler as a new name for the Maschinenpistole 43, subsequently known as the Sturmgewehr 44, the firearm generally considered the first assault rifle that served to popularise the concept and form the basis for today's modern assault rifles.

The translation assault rifle gradually became the common term for similar firearms sharing the same technical definition as the StG 44. In a strict definition, a firearm must have at least the following characteristics to be considered an assault rifle:

It must be an individual weapon with provision to fire from the shoulder (i.e. a buttstock);
It must be capable of selective fire;
It must have an intermediate-power cartridge: more power than a pistol but less than a standard rifle or battle rifle;
Its ammunition must be supplied from a detachable magazine rather than a feed-belt.
And it should at least have a firing range of 300 meters (1000 feet)

Rifles that meet most of these criteria, but not all, are technically not assault rifles despite frequently being considered as such. For example, semi-automatic-only rifles like the AR-15 (which the M16 rifle is based on) that share parts or design characteristics with assault rifles are not assault rifles, as they are not capable of switching to automatic fire and thus are not selective fire capable. Belt-fed weapons or rifles with fixed magazines are likewise not assault rifles because they do not have detachable box magazines.

The term "assault rifle" is often more loosely used for commercial or political reasons to include other types of arms, particularly arms that fall under a strict definition of the battle rifle, or semi-automatic variant of military rifles such as AR-15s.

The US Army defines assault rifles as "short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridge intermediate in power between submachinegun and rifle cartridges."

11. We on the left aren't entirely averse with the "... apologist" lable.

Problem is same as it becomes every time.

Way too much focus on the people involved and far too little on the actual issue(s). Batshit crazies on both sides get far too much attention.

prohibited to possess guns on account of mental illness. Paranoia coupled with their historical hallucinations are signs of psychopathology.

Firearm control played no role in the Nazi rise to power

Imagine that.
