USADA head: I got death threats during Armstrong probe

January 08, 2013 (CBS News) Travis Tygart is the head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which polices U.S. Olympic sports. Lance Armstrong won the world's most grueling event, the Tour de France, seven times. But after Tygart's investigation, Armstrong lost all of his titles. In his first interview, Tygart spoke with us for the premier of a new program, "60 Minutes Sports" on Showtime. Tygart says Armstrong was doping in his very first win at the Tour de France in 1999. The drug was EPO, which boosts endurance.

TRAVIS TYGART: Six samples that were taken from Lance Armstrong were retested in '05. And they were positive.

1. Something here stinks, and it isn't Lance Armstrong.

This Tygart guy retests samples in 2005, and they come up positive.

Why'd he and this agency wait 7 years to act on those findings?

4. The dopers are always one step ahead of the testers. Just like

the nitwits that create computer viruses. They find a drug that works that doesnt yet have a test. As the testing improves and learns which new drugs to detect, the dopers search for another drug. Most likely in 1998 they didnt test for this drug.

5. That may be...BUT

This claims he got positive results in *2005* for doping.

That means he (supposedly) had the evidence already, 7 years before.
Why'd this guy just sit on that evidence?

I'm beginning to smell money from other countries. Like France.

6. Let me try again. They took blood in 1998 and tested it. He passed for all drugs

known at that time. They probably werent aware then about this particular drug so didnt test for it. Most likely they now know about this drug and have a test that they didnt have in 1998 that shows the drug in his blood from back in 1998.

8. Sorry, I misunderstood. You mean from 2005 until now?

I thought you meant from 1999 until 2005. My mistake.

10. Yes. Read this from the original post...

"TRAVIS TYGART: Six samples that were taken from Lance Armstrong were retested in '05. And they were positive."

He's saying he got positive results in 2005.
Why did he just sit on those for 7 years?

Like I said, I smell money from other countries, probably France.

11. They had an open investigation during those years and since--keeping it quiet is not sitting on it.

They didn't sit on it, they were prosecuting people, removing them from athletics, and actively going after armstrong. He was fighting them back so the case continued.

No investigator goes public with all their information and findings while they are investigating. They present it during the case itself.

We have not been privy to many aspects of the case, but the case wasn't closed or ignored, it was active the entire time. NOW it is closed and they are telling us the facts.

If you were being investigated, do you think it would be right for them to share everything they know as they learn it, with everyone, in the press and on tv, or do you think they should wait until the investigation is closed and the evidence presented? They probably have hundreds of interviews, tests, etc.... should the investigator hold a press conference every day? "Today a French bicyclist said he saw Armstrong with a person who once took a drug, tune in at 11 to pass judgement on an open case!"

2. I'm not surprised about the death threats.

People don't want to see their heroes taken down, esp. when they deserve it.

9. We have someone that comes on DU and makes PM death threats

I had a couple of death threats back in the early days of the Iraq war because I thought it was imprudent and stupid.
