GOP Rep: ĎItís About Timeí We Had Another Government Shut Down

Source: Think Progress

Appearing on CBSí Face the Nation this morning, Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ) enthusiastically called for a government shut down:

SALMON: I was here during the government shutdown in 1995. It was a divided government. we had a Democrat President of the United States. We had a Republican Congress. And I believe that that government shutdown actually gave us the impetus, as we went forward, to push toward some real serious compromise. I think it drove Bill Clinton in a different direction, a very bipartisan direction. In fact, we passed welfare reform for the first time ever, and we cut the welfare ranks in the last decade and a half by over 50%. These are good things. We also balanced the budget for the first time in 40 years in 1997, 1998, 1999. And when I left we had an over $230 billion surplus. This was with a Democrat president, A Republican -

HOST: You think thatís a good idea?

SALMON: Yes, I do. I really do. I think itís about time!

Yeah, that did the GOP a lot of good in the '96 election. These morons never learn.

26. Amazing. that didn't work out so well for the GOP last time.

Maybe they'll shoot themselves in the foot again.

We can hope.

30. Of course not, what do you expect?

The GOP idiots have been obstructionist for years now, no reason for expecting any changes from them. They'll pay the price for such behavior eventually though, at the polls.

4. He was also there in 2001-06 when a republican president and Crongress spent wildly.

He was also there for two unfunded wars and a tax cut we could not afford. He wants to brag on welfare reform but Clinton had already had some welfare in Arkansas before becoming president. It was the Republican president and congress who took us from the black to red on the budget. Bush never heard of a dollar he wasn't willing to spend, he took down two companies before he became president and again history repeated itself, he broke the US also.

24. Yeah, lets have a total shutdown!

Yeah, Let's do as this ass says and totally shut the government down.

Ground all the airplanes, because all air traffic controllers are furloughed.
No Social Security checks, because all Social Security workers are furloughed
No food inspectors on the job, watch what happens when Supermarket shelves empty.
No prison guards. Watch the fun ensue.
No FBI agents on the job. Welcome back, Dillingers, Bonnie and Clydes!
No defense budget. Just keep our soldiers in their forts.
Best of all, NO CONGRESSIONAL PAY CHECKS! Let them join in the fun.

Watch the joy that results!

5. How do I file a FORMAL ethics complaint against him

for violation of his oath of office, dereliction of duty, making incendiary and dangerous public statements. Is there any way to suspend his federal welfare check also known as his salary until the ethics complaint is resolved?

9. They remember.

But in a fog of their own making. This guy actually believes that shut down caused Clinton to come to republican thinking and that's what created the surplus. Kind of like Grover just claiming it was republicans that voted to lower taxes after they were increased by the fiscal cliff fiasco. They're just delusional.

11. Corporate Media - Both Sides Are Villains. Both Sides To Blame

For example, here is Gloria Borger of CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/03/opinion/borger-fiscal-cliff-predictable-disaster/

And so Washington begins the next hurdle: the debt ceiling, playing at a theater near you in February. All villains, no heroes.

Thus, the corporate media gives Republicans political cover while trying to appear objective by preemptively blaming both Republicans and Democrats even though Republicans are the only party who are actively planning on initiating a default on purpose in order to gain an advantage in pushing their agenda.

I think the best follow-up question would be, "And what happened to that surplus under a GOP president?"

How long would that government shutdown last if THEY were the ones getting hosed?

20. This is your brain on GOP

This guy is a fucking moron. The last government shutdown didn't drive Clinton in a different direction, it drove the GOP bandwagon off a cliff. It cost the GOP 8 seats in the House and insured Clinton's reelection.

Oh, THAT'S right.

If they want a gov't. shutdown, (I.E., shoving a knife into their own eye) I'm not real inclined to stop them at this point. Let em suffer.
