McConnell: Any gun proposals to take back seat

Source: AP

BY ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell federal spending and the country’s debt will dominate the congressional agenda for the next three months, and that debate about potential gun legislation in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting will take a back seat.

The Kentucky lawmaker tells ABC’s “This Week” that lawmakers will wait to see what an Obama administration review led by Vice President Joe Biden might propose. McConnell says Congress will need to study any recommendations and then see what’s appropriate to do.

But he says that over the coming months, nothing much beyond the country’s finances will occupy the attention of Congress.

2. Way to go, McConnell. Show those 20 beautiful children who's in charge!

Hopefully, the next election will show you who is going to take a back seat on the bus out of Washington, DC. What a cold heart you have.

4. Well,in fairness

it's hard to see how Congressional Republicans can justify putting gun legislation ahead of their 34th attempt to repeal Obamacare. Priorities, people, priorities!

10. Bingo!

Harry Reid should also force a change in the filibuster rule too.

Republican rule # 1 pretend that republicans won the election.

since he can stop anything.

15. Right now? All the say he wants!

As two other posts here have pointed out, if there isn't any filibuster reform, McTurtle has complete control of the Senate agenda.

Call your Senators and demand a return to majority rule and an end to the tyranny of the minority in the U.S. Senate.

If the filibuster rule isn't changed, there will never be any debate on gun safety legislation in the Senate.

7. Run That Line Past Us One More Time, DU Gun Enthusiasts:

You know, the one about 2nd Amendment absolutism being a "liberal" cause.

As long as you have scum like McConnell pimping for you, that's going to be an awfully tough sell....

17. I'll bet something happens to protect Senator Reid from being in such an uncomfortable position

Perhaps there will be a backroom deal to kill or water down any serious proposal and make it look like it's all the Republicans' fault.

Then it will move on to the house where the Republicans can kill it with impunity.

28. I ran into that a lot in think tanks as well

I was astonished by how much consensus there was from both parties on what needed to be done, yet no one was willing to actually do it because it would offend some campaign contributor, alienate some constituency, interfere with some under-the-table deal, whatever. I found it thoroughly disheartening to see how small a role objective reality played in the policy making process.

30. I wish I could tell you that you are full of it.

Sadly I can't.

They put on a show during the day for the public, then go break bread and have drinks together at night. I would like to hear how they say about "us" among themselves.

It is well past the time they could be moved back to their districts. There is no longer a need for them to be based in Washington. Move them back home to face their constituents every day, and let the constituents see what their Representative(s) are really like. This would make it harder for lobbyists to access them. Local reporters and everyone else could keep a close eye on them. Maybe they would start voting for what their constituents want instead of their party and donors want. The monetary saving alone would justify this move.

the most gun hostile state in the union was unable to muster the votes for strict gun control. I disagree with your premise.

35. I don't personally know many Dems

who are pro gun control except maybe closing the so called gun show loophole. They are mostly all liberal
activists otherwise. It depends on who's definition of liberal one is using I guess or maybe where you live.

11. This headline would work for the last four years: "McConnell: Any Obama proposals to take back seat"

The GOP is pretty much committed to blocking all legislation, especially any that the people want. Republicans want the country, under any democratic president and especially with "that negro" in the white house, to fail.
