Matt Damon called ‘liar’ by pro-fracking filmmaker
By PATRICK GAVIN | 1/3/13 3:34 PM EST

Fracking fans have a new target: Matt Damon.

“Promised Land,” the new Gus Van Sant film about the controversial technique that acquires natural gas through drilling and pressurized fluid, stars and was written by Damon and costar John Krasinski, opens nationally Friday.

Phelim McAleer is launching a one-man campaign to call Damon out about the film. McAleer directed the documentary FrackNation, along with his wife Ann McElhinney, and the film paints a more sympathetic portrayal of fracking and aims to dispel some of the misinformation that McAleer and McElhinney believe have dominated the debate over the procedure’s environmental and health impact.

“This is classic propaganda,” McAleer told POLITICO. “It’s political from the beginning to the very end.” And that, according to McAleer, represents a large part of his problem with “Promised Land.”

Movieline.com attended on a panel discussion about “Promised Land” featuring Damon and reported that Damon said the movie wasn’t political.

“I don’t want to call Matt Damon a liar but he’s a liar, really,” McAleer said. “It’s a deeply political movie and it’s deeply disingenuous for Matt Damon to say otherwise. … Matt Damon isn’t telling the truth.”

1. McAleer is an industry tool

Of course he's pro-fracking. He's in the industry's back pocket.

2. No Contest....

K&R

It's just a reflection of life, McAleer. It's a movie. It's a story. Maybe allegory. It's ART. McAleer should never have opened his mouth. Why do they do that? They open their mouths and remove all doubt as to their intelligence, don't they? This "counter-attack" fracker fucker ( ) just shot himself in the foot and defeated his whole purpose. McAleer should have called his film "FrankinNation". I'm sure Matt just loves the free advertisement for "Promised Land". Hey.. in the 60s they wrote songs about the injustices that were occurring in our nation and all over the world. They make movies about it now. Aren't you used to that yet, McAleer?

6. Hey Phlegm McAleer, are you jealous?

Are you jealous that no one is coming to see your totally NON-POLITICAL "documentary"? You need a big star like Matt Damon. Get Honey Boo Boo. Splice in 30 minutes of the zany antics of that cherubic methane-emitting celebutante and I promise I will buy a ticket!

12. Both are liars

The truth lays broken and naked hiding in the corner.

Damon's movie was financed by UAE Oil Rich Government. Because we all know that the UAE is such a bastion of integrity.

14. Imagenation Abu Dhabi FZ is a film company. Other films they partially

financed include:
Men in Black 3
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) ..
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) ...
The Double (2011/I) ...
Contagion (2011) ...
The Help (2011) ...
The Beaver (2011) ...
The Way Back (2010/I) ...
Fair Game (2010/I)

Fair Game is the film about Cheney outing Valerie Plame. Just saying.

8. I believe you, Matt. As anyone can tell, it's simply a classic "boy meets girl" movie.

And, if you want me to say that under oath, I will.

I would rather vouch for that than for ]Maggie Gyllenhaal's claim that she would never dream of making an anti-union film.

Of course, they both lied, but I prefer Damon's message.

9. Liar? Like the lies the gas industry has been telling us?

Like how clean and green your frack-derived gas is, and how it's the key to saving us from global warming?

http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/01/02/1388021/bridge-to-nowhere-noaa-confirms-high-methane-leakage-rate-up-to-9-from-gas-fields-gutting-climate-benefit/?mobile=nc

Researchers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have reconfirmed earlier findings of high rates of methane leakage from natural gas fields. If these findings are replicated elsewhere, they would utterly vitiate the climate benefit of natural gas, even when used to switch off coal.

Indeed, if the previous findings — of 4% methane leakage over a Colorado gas field — were a bombshell, then the new measurements reported by the journal Nature are thermonuclear:

… the research team reported new Colorado data that support the earlier work, as well as preliminary results from a field study in the Uinta Basin of Utah suggesting even higher rates of methane leakage — an eye-popping 9% of the total production. That figure is nearly double the cumulative loss rates estimated from industry data — which are already higher in Utah than in Colorado.

Anything above 3-4% leakage rate, and natural gas is WORSE THAN COAL with regard to global warming.

Fuck you, gasbag.

the benefits of this clean clever new way to wreck the planet??

Sorry, Phlegm, go crawl back into your fracking hole.

11. Fracking

I do not know if it is political, but it certainly is personal.

If the new method of fracking is so safe, why was it given an exemption from the clean air and water act ?

Why was Halliburton given special considerations ?

Why are many of the fracking chemicals kept secret ?

The powers that be think we are all uninformed idiots.

We are well aware of who is in charge of this country and it's corrupt government, and it is certainly not we the people.

We have been sold to the highest bidders.

The 1% have the best representation their money could buy on K Street, Wall Street and in DC.

The 99% pay their taxes and have zero representation.

17. The Energy Industry Is Mobilizing Against Damon's Movie.

Memos from management are being distributed to employees, both national and international. It happened with "Gasland," and it's sure as hell going on with "Promised Land." This Phlegm person is just part of a much bigger, extremely well-funded, corporate propaganda move.

21. Most big budget films are financed from more than one source. This film is no different.

Image Nation Abu Dhabi is the company. They also had a hand in films such as Men In Black 3, The Help, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Fair Game (the one about Valerie Plame) Ghost Rider sequel...they are in the movie business.

28. Sort of

Over on the E/E board we have a few people who I won't name that support fracking as a lesser evil vs. coal, oil and nuclear. Also, natural gas is vital to current plants to build a grid based on wind and solar, since gas-fired peaking plants would serve as back-ups when the wind dies down and the sun sets.

However, with current research now showing fracked gas wells losing so much methane that they're WORSE then coal WRT global warming, it's probably time to re-evaluate that whole plan.

We can sheppard our natural resources and use them sustainably, or we can destroy them for short term gain.
