Tom DeLay sentenced to 3 years in prison!!

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Rhiannon12866 (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

AUSTIN, Texas Former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, once considered among the nation's most powerful and feared lawmakers, was sentenced to three years in prison Monday for a scheme to influence elections that already cost him his job, leadership post and millions of dollars in legal fees.

The sentence comes after a jury in November convicted DeLay, a Houston-area Republican, on charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering for using a political action committee to illegally send corporate donations to Texas House candidates in 2002.

5. Hooray!! Too Bad He Won't Serve A Single Day

He'll be in a grave before his appeals run out, and because he's "special," he is out on bail.

It's great that he was convicted, but he isn't going to pay any sort of penalty, jail time included.

12. Yeah..you are indeed correct:

Prosecutors said DeLay will likely be free for months or even years as his appeal makes it through the Texas court system.

So the crime was in 2002 and so far, he has had no jail time, looks like.

8. The case has been on appeal for the last two + years

DeLay has been appealing this case since the verdict was rendered back in 2011. One of his grounds for appeal is that the Texas money laundering law only applies to cash and does not apply to checks.

Juanita Jean and a group of Democrats from Fort Bend County went to Austin for the sentencing

13. Commenting on the actual case:

Delay is accused of circumventing campaign finance laws (money laundering). Basically, you are limited in what you can donate to a candidate, but unlimited in what you can donate to a political party.

So a political party will go to donors and say "I know you already Gave 2,000 to congressman douchebag, but if you give the Texas State Central GOP 10,000, we will forward it onto him".

Delay is saying that this is selective prosecution. In a way he is right. He is right because this is extraordinarily common in politics. It is MASSIVELY common.

My thought is as follows:

Too fucking bad Delay, you were one of the biggest opponents of campaign finance reform. If there was public financing of campaigns, none of this would happen.

/my two cents

14. Russ, you do know that this story is a year old, don't you? And it's not an update, either.

But you had me there for a second, I thought he'd actually gone to prison. Although HuffPo is confusing that way sometimes, you're not the first to do it. So I'll save the Schadenfreude kitteh for later, okay?

17. This appeal is going to last for a while longer

This is indeed old news and it will be a while before DeLay will be serving any time. In addition to the crazy issue that checks are not money, I understand that his counsel has raised some defenses bases on Citizen United.

24. If he ever has to pay for his crimes, and this being one of his smaller ones, I want as part of the

agreement that all of the episodes of DWTS with him be removed so kids won't grow up to think this man was doing anything for the world. He's a low-down crook through and through and directly involved in the coup of 2000. Okay, I know that isn't going to happen, anymore than he is likely to go to prison, but I'd like to see all of that...

20. Great! We rarely see the elite pay a price for their behavior.

I honestly don't care what Party they donate to or represent either. If the "elite"* are breaking the law and corrupting our government and the country, they need to be held accountable and sent to prison. This is a rare instance of accountability.

*Wikipedia definition of the elite is succinct and accurate:

"An elite in political and sociological theory, is a small group of people who control a disproportionate amount of wealth or political power."
