Source: Geithner to leave by month's end

By Kate Davidson and Ben White - 1/3/13 @ 2:45 PM ET

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner plans to leave the administration by the end of the month and he really means it this time.

Geithner intends to leave his post at the end of January, whether or not a deal is in place to raise the debt ceiling, according a source close to the Treasury secretary.

Geithner previously pushed back his departure plans to work on the resolution to the fiscal cliff at the request of President Barack Obama.

The source said Geithner will return to New York City and that he had long planned to leave Washington after the fiscal cliff fight was over.

12. There are so many really capable economists to nominate but I fear another

Wall Street insider will replace him.

5. Sounds good to me!

We need someone with the eloquence to champion our ideals, not some shifty-eyed investment banker mumbling through clenched teeth. Stiglitz sounds good. Hell, a LOT of people sound good compared to Geithner.

17. Joe Stiglitz was nice enough to respond with a hand-written letter when I

wrote him some time back to comment on a paper he had published. The brightest people are sometimes the most gracious.

A truly nice man.

Howard Zinn was also extremely gracious, patient and unpretentious. I was fortunate to have a number of classes with him in college.

11. I'll be very interested to see who replaces the SOB

We should ask Senator Warren for recommendations and leave Diamond Jamie and Pretty Boy Lloyd out of the loop.

13. Never fear, it will be a Wall Street insider.

All the actions of this administration and of Congress both past and probably in future seem to point to protecting the markets at a cost to the rest of us.

That means 3 of the big 4--Treasury, State, Defense, and Justice--will change hands in the next couple months.
