Aceh {Indonesia} cracks down on women passengers

Source: Syndey Morning Herald

A city in Indonesia's Islamic law stronghold of Aceh will ban women passengers from straddling motorbikes, describing the position as "improper".

The move comes after leaders from the country's only province ruled under strict sharia law drafted a series of new bills, including banning women from wearing tight trousers, and allowing the stoning adulterers and the flogging of homosexuals.

Under the new law, women in Lhokseumawe city, on the northern tip of Sumatra island, will have to sit "side-saddle" with their legs dangling off to one side.

"Women sitting on motorbikes must not sit astride because it will provoke the male driver. It's also to protect women from an undesirable condition,"

It is so good to see that some religious traditions are able to preserve their Bronze and Iron Age values in the face of the corroding influence of the modern secular world.

Religion: Fighting the Enlightenment, by extinguishing one light at a time.

1. Know what I hate MOST about these Islamic "decency" laws?

It's that they ASSUME that every man is a slobbering sex maniac who gets "aroused" or "provoked" at the sight of female flesh or any kind of "suggestive" female action.

It's insulting to men just as well as women.

2. That's not just Islamists

Hear how women, through how they are are dressed or where they go, are 'provoking' men into raping them... Oh, sorry, legitimately raping them.

6. "Free Aceh."

Big deal, once upon a time. When there was an obvious, easy-to-hate bogeyman government strong-man.

Now that Aceh is free the population isn't really free. But it's free in the ways that are really important. The enemy was defeated, victory declared, and we've moved on to ... Syria.

7. If anyone over there....

...has a dirty mind, it's their religious leaders. What the hell is "an undesirable condition?" Here's what they need to ban: Religion.

8. Gotta agree 100%

The common root problem on almost everything is religion.

10. Just one thing - don't diss the bronze and iron age.

If the ancients had motorbikes, most of them wouldn't have thought to mandate anything this hateful and impractical.
