Colorado gets members-only clubs for legal pot use
By KRISTEN WYATT, Associated Press | January 1, 2013 | Updated: January 1, 2013 1:58am

DENVER (AP) With reggae music pumping in the background and flashing disco-style lights, members of the recreational pot club lit up in celebration of the new year and a new place to smoke legally among friends.

Club 64, in an industrial area just north of downtown Denver, opened at 4:20 p.m. on Monday, with some 200 people signed up. The opening came less than 24 hours after organizers announced they would charge a $29.99 admission price for the bring-your-own pot club.

"Look at this!" Chloe Villano exclaimed as the club she created over the weekend opened. "We were so scared because we didn't want it to be crazy. But this is crazy! People want this."

The private pot dens popped up less than a month after Colorado's governor signed into law a constitutional amendment allowing recreational pot use. Club 64 gets its name from the number of the amendment.

3. 'Corry said...

...the pot clubs are intended for people who can't use marijuana at home because of local ordinance or because their landlords threaten eviction.'

Valid concerns, certainly. The article also mentions that turnout far exceeded expectations, so it's within the realm of possibility that popularity could lead to lower prices for all.

4. I believe I have seen many a meal cost in excess of this fee.

Not to mention a gift, lunch and precious coffee at Starbucks. Also, I can hardly get out of Barnes and Noble without spending this much and more. Everything's relative. I would think the freedom and company of friends would be well worth it, and I don't even smoke the green stuff.

5. It is much more like going to a bar then a party...

Except the bar does not provide the weed, you have to bring your own, so they make money by charging an admission fee. I'm ok with that.

6. Thirty bucks isn't gouging.

I'm sure I could get a lot more weed than I could smoke in a night for thirty bucks, but not having to worry about getting hauled off to jail or evicted over it is worth something too.

Edited to add: I should've said "More weed than a smoker could smoke in a night". Thirty bucks would take me a decade to smoke.

8. Will make it easier...

for the Feds to go after pots users, since they just have to seize membership lists.

10. Nope... Feds will never go after the "smoker" Too low of fruit and that is the type of activity

that will cause the masses to rise up. I think when the passage of legalized MJ was successful in two states, it sent a message to the WH and feds. Over 1/4 of the USA has medicinal MJ. The nation is trending toward something.......

12. The feds have pretty much left medical marijuana patients alone in California.

Although they have shut down hundreds of dispensaries.

13. for now...

No doubt they are hanging on to those patient lists seized from the raided dispensaries. Just in case they might need them to purge voter rolls or something.

21. hmmm, a lot of what used to be "paranoia" is now a legitimate concern

I used to not be the least bit worried about having my communications monitored or the retirement age increasing.

Maybe I just need better tinfoil.

14. Now that legalization has taken hold - it's time to support the flip side issues:

As someone noted above; Designated drivers will be waiting outside ? ....

Ever been to a bar or club where police have several hidey holes in which to lie in wait and snare unsuspecting (AKA Idiot) drivers who have just walked out of the bar, stumbling to their car and fumbling with their keys ?

Trust me - Police will be standing by, ready to assist in the capture of lawbreaking, pot-addled drivers, and the community will be happy they are ....

I would NOT join any such group ... IF I chose to smoke, I would do it in the privacy of my own home, or at a friend's home, or at a concert or some other anonymous party .... The last place I would smoke would be a newly opened 'Pot Club' ...

Concerns about pot smokers behind the wheel are legitimate, and smokers need to be responsible citizens ....

They need to take DWI issues seriously, as they need to take drug addiction issues seriously ....

I tell my kids; The freedom to use pot is a good thing, and that users should have the right to ingest in safety and without fear of arrest .... But; users need to make sure they keep a tacit promise to their own communities to NOT allow legal usage to cause problems in the community or in family life. The legalization of Marijuana doesn't preclude good civic or familial behavior ....

In the end; It is still best to live clean and stay clean of all drugs, even though they may be legal .... It's a matter of personal responsibility to keep your mind and body free of the consequences of drug use ..... That would be the ideal ....

Will fade when the numbers don't support the concerned troll's expectations.

22. I agree with you!

Just like the dire predictions of freeway-clogging carnage after the repeal of the double nickle and the way over-hyped cell-phone hysteria, very little will actually happen.
