L.A. man charged in burning of homeless woman

LOS ANGELES A 24-year-old Los Angeles man was charged Monday with attempted murder after a homeless woman was set on fire last week as she slept on a suburban bus bench, the district attorney's office said.

Dennis Petillo is scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court on the attempted murder charge and an additional count of aggravated mayhem, said Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney. Carney will ask that Petillo's bail be set at $1.03 million.

Prosecutors say Petillo threw a flammable liquid on the 67-year-old woman then set her on fire last Thursday. She remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, officials said.

Police have released no motive for the crime that shocked the San Fernando Valley community of Van Nuys, where the woman had made her home on the streets for years.

3. I don't understand

This country mobilized the unemployed, underfed, many homeless
into the Civilian Conservation Corps in military organized camps, paid them,
fed them, changed their lives.

Now the closest thing we have to that is quick storage businesses for our
junk everywhere the eye can see, and three car garages on every
McMansion.

There is no will, and no political will, to help these homeless people to regain
their lives.

At least shelters - some city-run, some supported by government aid, many
run by churches or missions - at least they try.

Politically? In Washington? We're throwing around Trillions, and want more money
for the wealthiest among us.

Something is out of whack. Way beyond wacko.

5. Can DU 'adopt' this lady?

Set up a fund for her somehow? Is there a local org that can take on her needs? Anybody know?

I can't think of anything worse than this. I'm glad they caught the perp. Reading through to the end of the article, I can't get over there being so many cases of homeless people set on fire! Wtf?!!!
