Harry Carey Jr. dies at 91; character actor in John Ford films

Source: LA Times

Harry Carey Jr., a venerable character actor who was believed to be the last surviving member of director John Ford's legendary western stock company, died Thursday. He was 91.

Carey, whose career spanned more than 50 years and included such Ford classics as "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "The Searchers," died of natural causes in Santa Barbara, said Melinda Carey, a daughter.

"In recent years, he became kind of the living historian of the modern era," film critic Leonard Maltin told The Times on Friday. "He would get hired on films by young directors who just wanted to work with him, to be one step away from the legends. Some hired him to just hear his stories between takes."

1. I recently watched one of his father's films, and it stated me thinking about the son.

One wants to say 'how sad', but at 91 he lived a long, full life. We just seem to be on a streak of losing some amazing character actors, lately. Charles Durning, Jack Klugman, and now Harry Carey, Jr. They are the backbone of the industry.

2. just watched him in The Whales of August a few nights ago

a great little film from 1987 that features some of the final performances of Bette Davis, Lillian Gish, Vincent Price and Ann Southern.

I looked Carey up after the film and noticed he was the only cast member still living.

4. Addicted to IMDB.com.... me too.

The S.O. often asks so many questions while we're watching any film that I just leave the computer running.

3. Makes Maureen O'Hara one of the last

of the John Ford team, although I wouldn't consider her a member of the John Ford Stock company, and Patrick Wayne the last, or one of last, of the John Ford Stock company.

R.I.P. thanks for the entertainment.
