Car sales on way to best year since 2007

The U.S. auto industry should close out a robust 2012 in which Americans bought about 14% more new vehicles than in 2011, the third consecutive year sales rose by more than 10%.

Industry forecasters now expect total sales for 2012 to top 14.5 million cars and trucks when automakers report December sales on Thursday. That would cap the best year since 2007, when sales totaled 16.1 million.

More significantly, the annual selling rate increased steadily throughout the year, and the December pace came in at about 15.4 million, according to most forecasts.

"We are ending the year on a very high note, higher than I think anyone anticipated," said Michele Krebs, senior analyst at Edmunds.com.

2. This fact was a pivitol voting point in Ohio.

Obama won much of Ohio due to the auto industry support.

4. That's amazing considering the very low wages around here.

I have to wonder where are people getting the money? They certainly don't have good paying jobs, at least not around here. They didn't buy much at the stores for Christmas this year. There were even more people lined up outside the church Christmas eve for the free food baskets. I really don't get it. Where are the jobs these people have that allow them to buy cars that averages over $30,000? They are certainly not here in in Greene County TN, where our unemployment rate is over 12%.

It's great that the economy is just going gang busters without me or my friends. I just wish I knew where these people are getting these jobs that allow them to buy $30,000 cars? And I wish they would send some of those jobs here to Greene County TN.

5. I did my part

2013 Chevy Equinox. Took delivery on Dec. 15th.

It's a great vehicle. Best gas mileage and towing capacity of all vehicle of that class. And it drives like a luxury car.

6. Cars always wear out sooner or later. People replace them out of necessity.

That's why car sales often rebound before the rest of the economy catches up.
