White House talks don't include NRA: gun group president

By David Ingram
WASHINGTON | Fri Dec 28, 2012 5:45pm EST

(Reuters) - An effort led by Vice President Joe Biden to find ways to reduce gun violence after the Connecticut school massacre so far has not included talking to the National Rifle Association, the president of the gun rights group said on Friday.

NRA President David Keene said neither Biden nor his staff has contacted the organization since President Barack Obama unveiled the effort on December 19.

Keene said he was not surprised, given Biden's past support for new gun control laws. "He's not even a friendly antagonist," Keene told Reuters in an interview.

The lack of communication between the White House and the largest U.S. lobbying group for gun owners is a sign that the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, has so far failed to change long-held stances on gun politics. In that tragedy, a young man shot his mother with her own gun before killing 20 children and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

1. Why waste the time? They've clearly demonstrated that they have nothing serious to contribute.

3. Why should WH talks include NRA?

The nra has politicians that are bought off, er, representing them so Biden and co. should talk to them (politicians). Just like they talk to our elected reps. Nra has no right to be included in any talks.

6. Talking to the NRA would be counter productive.

It would be like trying to discuss anything with a FOX talking head.

7. Imagine that!

Should the CEO of RJR be invited to a summit on reducing teen smoking?

These people have a LOT of nerve, I'll give them that.

13. Why?

The NRA's position is clear and its arguments well-known.

The group already made its "contribution" to the discussion last Friday.

Now, shut up.

16. David Keene is one of the most enduring of the original Movement Conservatives

He was a national chairman of Young Americans for Freedom in the 1960s. He served as an aide to Spiro Agnew, to Reagan in the 1970s, and then to Bush the Elder during the 1980 campaign. He was involved with some of the creepier anti-communist groups of that period, including the American-Chilean Council -- defenders of the Pinochet dictatorship -- and the Council for Inter-American Security, which had close ties with Latin American neo-fascists and domestic racists. He then headed the American Conservative Union from 1984 until last year, when he moved over to the NRA.

In short, this is someone whose roots in the extreme right go back almost 50 years. He is not anybody who can be expected to talk sense or make reasonable compromises.
