Source: USA Today

A suspect under arrest was shot and killed inside a police station in New Jersey early Friday after he obtained a weapon and opened fire on three officers, injuring one seriously, according to police officials.

The gunfire erupted at the Gloucester Township police headquarters around 5:30 a.m. ET, according to Deputy Chief David Harkins, the (Cherry Hill, N.J.) Courier-Post reported.

He said the unidentified suspect got his hands on a firearm and shot at the three officers.

"The officers returned fire and the suspect is deceased at this time inside the police station," he said.

1. If only they had been armed...

oh wait...

Still, I hope the officers are ok.

I hate all this gun talk. It feels like whatever you say is the wrong argument...

5. not to joke, but I

agree with your "if only thy had been armed."

This same thing happened many years ago at DC police headquarters in the homicide unit. A veteran homicide detective and 2 FBI agents working on cold cases were shot by a suspected perp posing as a witness. The detective and one of the agents died.

What that whore LaPierre and all the other gun nuts don't seem to grasp is the element of surprise combined with careful planning (often) and a willingness to die as well on the part of the criminal.

More guns -- as in everyone armed -- will not change this.

2. Was it a police weapon or did the police fail to search him properly?

Inquiring minds want to know.

3. According to this NBC news article

Gunman dead after shooting 3 cops at N.J. police station
By Jason White, NBC News

The gunman who shot three officers after a "violent struggle" at a New Jersey police station early Friday is dead, officials said.

The suspected shooter had been brought into Gloucester Township Police station for a domestic incident when he got into a confrontation with officers, reported NBC's Philadelphia affiliate, NBC 10.

"A violent struggle occurred while the suspect was being processed," Deputy Chief David Harkins said. The man was able to grab a gun and then opened fire.

One of the injured officers was rushed to surgery after being shot below his bulletproof vest, and the other two were hospitalized with minor injuries.

6. So a bad guy took a gun away from the good guys and used it against the good guys

This is very sad but it must be noted. The good guys were trained professionals who got their gun taken from them. Imagine what would happen if a bunch of amateur good guys had guns.

It's weird but ever sense the NRA VP spoke there has been one gun incident after another in the last week proving everything he said incorrect. I hope it ends soon, all the killing. It's just too much,

10. Cops are required to get within arms reach of the suspects.

Regular folks are under no such requirement. Plus it is recommended that they don't do so.

4. If only the police had some NRA training

best of thoughts for the victims and I am glad the shooter is dead.

7. Normally I might put the boots in for expressing that sentiment.

However, given what he was dragged in on, I have a strong suspiscion his partner just got a second lease on life. One can only hope she doesn't choose another arsehole, as is sadly, all too often the case.

13. Yes, it actually WAS a gun-free zone

Unless this PD allows weapons into the booking area. I have quite a few LEOs as relatives, and none of them are allowed to bring weapons into the station proper. Most of a Police Department is a gun-free zone.

14. It's just the booking area. They carry their guns everywhere else.

I've done computer work in both our local police dept. and sheriffs dept. The only place they check their weapons is at the booking section of the county jail.

9. Wonder what their protocol was....

locally no one goes into the booking area with a weapon...no one.

Especially if they are an accredited agency its a requirement.

11. My uncle is a LEO, and said the same thing

NO ONE gets into that area with a weapon. He said, in his PD, the officer whose weapon was grabbed would be let go with a reduced pension, as per the PD and union rules.
