Man Is Pushed to His Death Under Train in Queens

Source: NYT

A young woman pushed a man to his death under an oncoming train at the 40th Street-Lowery Street subway station in Queens on Thursday evening, law enforcement authorities said.

The woman walked behind the man along the platform, mumbling to herself, witnesses told the police, before shoving him into the path of a northbound No. 7 train just after 8 p.m. Witnesses said the victim did not appear to notice her. The woman, whom the police described as Hispanic, in her early 20s and heavyset, fled and was being sought by all police officers in the area.

(...)

It is the second time this month that a man has been killed after being pushed onto the subway tracks. Ki-Suck Han, 58, of Elmhurst, Queens, died under the Q train at the 49th Street and Seventh Avenue station in early December.

What is going ON with humanity this month? The school shooting, the mall shooting, the murder of the firefighters, and now people getting pushed on subway tracks.

I wonder if the woman who committed this crime wanted notoriety to the level of the earlier subway push that inspired a controversial New York Post cover. We've got to re-consider how the media covers crime.

1. It seems to be the new planking

The seams are starting to come undone. I wonder if we will become more and more desensitized to our decay, or will at some point recognize what is happening.

2. They can easily get rid of this problem like is done at Disney or the airports or overseas

You have to put alot of money into the infrastructure

and you can put glass walls that are closed until the train comes to a halt, at which time the glass slides and the doors open

5. Why glass? Just use metal fence to prevent this. Am I a genius or what?

6. glass or more important bullet proof glass divider works better

a metal fence can lead to holes in it, and also block views of people inside and out.
Makes more sense to have total clear sight views.

9. Why all the fuss? Just a 4 ft metal fence is all you need. Genius!

Do you realize how expensive bullet proof glass is that size? Am I a genius or what?

15. 4ft? The stations are like 3 football fields long. Good things cost money

which is why they have taxes, and taxes need to be raised for infrastructures
or bonds sold to do it.

Also, some stations have a gap between platform and train that someone can trip on
This would solve that too.

And some stations have more than 2 tracks each, so it would be 1000s and 1000s needed

Maybe a good way to make money would be to tax each bullet sold $10,000 each to pay for such work, or increase taxes statewide at WalMart(say 20% for each Walmart that sold guns or something)

19. I have observed more and more white people seething with rage, hatred and racism.

Not just the proverbial old white guys, but men and women, young and old - one common denominator seems to be a low level of education and/or intelligence, often evidenced by atrocious spelling and grammar. Many are Republicans/tea partiers, but some are lifelong Democrats as well. They are swarming out of the woodwork to comment on threads such as the local paper (the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), sans logic, sans common sense, sans any civility whatsoever. I see and hear them "live" as well, in daily interactions at stores, library, filling station, etc.

My explanation: I think they know the sun is setting on the era of white majority/rule in the US and it is causing psychotic breaks.

After the last election, I saw one man - whom the GOP had once run(unsuccessfully, thank god!) for sheriff in Allegheny County(Pittsburgh is part of that county) - put on an incredibly offensive and juvenile display at the polling place. He had been stationed there as an observer by the GOP & I had to repeatedly stop him from violating the rules as to what an observer could do/say throughout the day.

After the polls closed, he went outside to remove the GOP candidates' signs. He also started taking down the Democrats' signs, but when he got to Obama's, he jerked his hands back as if he'd burned them, said "Ewwww. This is dirty!", while mincing around on his tip toes, and holding his little pinkie fingers out like he was delicately drinking tea. Then he shouted that Obama was a thug. Keep in mind that this guy is built like a sumo wrestler - minimally 300 lbs. It was not a pretty picture! I've known this man and his wife for years - they live in my neighborhood. I've been a guest in their home. I knew he was very conservative - but he'd always been pleasant in political disagreements. It's like when neighbors of serial killers are interviewed: "But he was always such a nice guy!"

23. Sometimes there's just one answer to a lot of questions.

The answer doesn't always make sense, but that's got to be the answer. It's just got to. Otherwise the world can't make sense and all you have left is an unfounded belief.

Well, that's all you really have to begin with in such cases, but sometimes this realization threatens to become powerful enough to shred one's confirmation bias. Can't have that.

7. I always stand away from the edge (Mind The Gap).

Particularly during rush hour - and I ALWAYS look at those around me, esp. when the train is beginning to pull in. I guess such thoughts only occur to those who've lived with mass transit for a long-ish period of time.

8. What's going on with humanity? About the usual.

The US homicide rate has been falling steadily for more than 20 years, to about one-half of what it was in 1990. There are still many thousands of cases, and you hear about many of these (as is to be expected). The only counter-trend in this has been in rampage killings - those have stayed steady or gone up in the same period as the homicide rate generally has fallen.

Also, something like 60 people got killed by New York subway trains last year. This is not nice, and deplorable, and worthy of taking preventive actions if any effective ones can be found - but it does not represent anything unusual for humanity generally in this month as opposed to any other.

28. 60 people got killed by New York subway trains last year?

Wow.

How many were people falling or being pushed off platforms? I assume the rest would, what, be crossing tracks?

I'm always amazed at the lack of safety rails when I ride the subway.

29. Pushing is rare. Those have to be publicized.

Falling and self-murder is common. This came out after the Post photo story. MTA figures: about 200 were hit by trains, 60 died. They really don't like to publicize the figures, there are always rumors around that it's one a day, but I don't believe that. I've overheard conductors and such talking about deaths. Hey, come to think of it, I've been on trains a few times where they said we were delayed because of "someone on the tracks." Presumably most of the 200 did not fall into the tracks but fell into the train as it was moving inside the station. Otherwise I don't see how this many could have been hit but survived.

It's funny because everyone's scared of crime on the subway, where it is almost non-existent compared to the street. I mean, not really funny. You know what I mean.

11. Look ... people have been getting pushed onto railroad tracks since there were railroad tracks ..

People are just as wonderful/evil now as they were wonderful/evil then ....

The difference might be: Lack of funding for street level mental health care, which I know Reagan cut soon after taking office, and of which I am unsure has ever been restored to the required fullness ... The 'homeless' have been inundated with neurotics and psychotics ever since.

EDIT: I don't know about anybody else, but I will not stand with my back to someone else on a train station platform .... No where near the tracks ..... I would rather stand on the train than get run over underneath it ....

aren't helping society either.

22. This incident is not a comment on the state of humanity -

unless you mean that in general and historical terms. It certainly says nothing about humanity this month as opposed to any other month in recent history (since trains and very sick people started existing side by side). Unless it's a comment about what humanity is interested in this month.
