Newspaper sparks outrage for publishing names, addresses of gun permit holders

An interactive map showing the names and addresses of all handgun permit holders in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties has infuriated many readers since it was posted Saturday on a newspaper's website.

The map, published by The Journal News, allows readers to zoom in on red dots that indicate which residents are licensed to own pistols or revolvers. It had prompted more than 1,700 comments as of Wednesday morning.

Blue dots indicate permit holders who "have purchased a firearm or updated the information on a permit in the past five years."

2. It is a matter of public record. These people have no case.

What they are doing is admitting that they thing that their guns are attractive to robbers, therefore they actually abet crime.

What is their problem? Didn't they know that when they registered for gun permits this would go into a public database?

NOW they complain?

4. Rebecca Shaeffer's address was public information in 1989 when a stalker got it from the California

Department of Motor Vehicles.

Maybe it's time for states to make it a little harder for personal information about citizens to be released wholesale to anyone.

3. If it's public information the people should lobby the state to classify this as protected info

The only valid argument I could see would be that it gives any easily accessible list for burglars who like to steal firearms, 99% of those residences will probably contain firearms and ammo.

5. I agree with madville. It's called a First Amendment Solution.

Petitioning the government for redress of grievances.

6. I have no problem with it as long as all state and county issued licenses are public info

Either they should all be available or none of the info should be available. I'm talking about all government issued licenses:teachers, realty, nurses, doctors, police, fire, drivers license info, etc, etc.

Thinking about it more I would hate to be a rape victim or someone hiding from an abusive spouse for example and have my information easily obtainable online.
