Father Christmas off air in Uzbekistan

Source: BBC

Television viewers in Uzbekistan looking for the familiar features of Father Christmas on their screens this year will be disappointed following an unofficial ban by the state broadcaster.

It is the latest move to downgrade Soviet or Russian heritage in modern Uzbek culture.

Celebrating Christmas characters became popular when largely Muslim Central Asia was a part of the Soviet Union.

It is not clear who gave the order, but Father Christmas (known locally as Grandfather Frost) and his female companion Snow Maiden, once regular fixtures, are now apparently unwelcome foreigners.

1. Yeah pretty amusing that people speak of a "war on Christmas" when this happens

Hell it gets even worse. Try celebrating Christmas in North Korea or Saudi Arabia. Nothing in comparison to a "Happy Holidays" banner at some store I'm sure.

2. OMG - Santa is a Commie! It now makes complete sense, all that sharing stuff, and the lists of good

and bad boys and girls.

A fuckin' Commie! No longer wanted in Muslim Central Asia that now owes more to Dubai and than to Moscow for inspiration.

Is this what we won the Cold War for?

8. I think it does snow in Central Asia including Uz-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan.

VERY cold in that region right now. So there is a chance that snow could fall.
