NRA shill Wayne LaPierre on Meet the Press today. The lowest of the low has been reached.

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Rhiannon12866 (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: NBC MEET THE PRESS TV PROMOS &GUIDE LISTINGS

After his supposed "Press Conference" was not open for questions he spewed more blame for gun violence on everything but the guns themselves. There was a time that MTP was somewhat acceptable but no more. Giving this highly paid & dishonest glorified lobbyist ANY AIR TIME while kids are still being buried goes beyond despicable! Shame on them. Just wanted to see if we as a group let them.know that the insensitivity, combined with what will be a hard holiday as is for those in Newtown, as well as all over the country. It is a disgrace that David Gregory or whomever allowed this lobbying shill for the gun manufacturers to be a featured guest on your air. David Gregory should be replaced as managing editor. NBC & MTP apparently truly have no class & no shame. I don't always agree with the format on MTP, but this is the last straw. I don't know how they sleep at night. This is distressing. PLEASE, if you agree with this let them know.

Storm any news outlet giving him a voice. Overwhelm them with calls and emails telling the news outlet that we consider them to be sponsoring domestic terrorism.

I notice even here on DU, the gun nuts are really in it for attention and to stir the pot. If they are ignored, it makes them bonkers and takes away all their power.

There are people here who know about guns and are willing to use their knowledge to discuss how to put teeth into gun control legislation. They get right to it. They say things like, "that rule is not going to work, it's based on faulty conventional wisdom, X would work better." It goes right to facts and policy points.

The gun nuts get right into the talking points: we need more guns, everything else is the problem, nothing will work, people need to understand their own insignificance when faced with changing the gun culture. It's pure bullshit right off the bat.

We need to completely turn our backs on that latter group, and this guy is the mouthpiece for them. We need to collectively make it known that we see him in the same light as we see Ted Kazinski or Timothy McVeigh. At the same time as we work to make real, muscular and effective gun control, we need a grass roots movement to reject LaPierre and anyone who stands with him.

when the "press conference" turned into a speech without questions, but I disagree strongly with not having a discussion of ideas. My problem is that I do not trust reporters to ask the right questions and do the research necessary to conduct a meaningful review. I would put some of the Youtube videos up with the large capacity magazines and bump slide technology and ask the NRA what happens when someone walks into a school with such an arsenal.

Dec 2012

we say we will tolerate a discussion of "ideas" we get the talking points. I will not engage in that nonsense any more. It throws up a roadblock to any actual constructive discussion, which is what the NRA and their ilk is after. They put up enough roadblocks, and the public loses attention and the storm blows over.

LaPierre is not going to create a discussion. He will prevent one. If MTP were putting up a responsible voice for how to enact gun laws that are reasonable, that allow for people to own one gun, or very few guns, for hunting or self protection, and how to do it without destroying MY right to go about my day without fear of getting shot, I would tune in enthusiastically and take notes. But we never get those voices. We get LaPierre who wants us all to have a gun in our handbags without any regulation at all.

We need to demand better from news outlets like MTP.

(And by the way, I'll bet that within a week or so, Rachel gets some person who fits my description on her show. And as I say, I'll tune in and take notes, and work to see the measures enacted.)

And if I read him right last weekend, it may not be kindly. By the way, MTP wanted a pro-gun person on last week's show -- just two days after the tragedy -- but everyone declined.

I say let LaPierre go on MTP. When people see him for the sick, stubborn piece of work that he is, maybe it might convince some to rethink their opinions on gun availability in this country. Like it or not, LaPierre is a major player in this debate and what he has to say is noteworthy.

Again -- the tenor of this show is entirely up to Gregory.

Wayne LaPierre about the sweep of the press room? That surely seems to go against everything the NRA stands for, not allowing guns into the room.

A serious, honest journalist doing their job would ask that question. Gregory, yeah right.

Wayne LaPierre is actually a mole whose personal agenda is to get guns banned. His mission is to say the dumbest, most ridiculous and heartless stuff. That way, he can piss even the most dedicated gun owners off and have them rethink their position.

Or maybe he's some kind of bizarre comedy routine. "Guards in every school?" More guns you say? Good one LaPierre! Hahaha...

I don't get US TV, so all I see is clips sent to me, but Gregory gives me the impression of being a complete Republican shill. Maybe this is a false impression, but it's what I've gotten from seeing him so far.

So, either Gregory demolishes LaPierre, or he kisses his ass (or tosses him softball questions, which is the same thing). There is no in-between. If Gregory give LaPierre a free ride, it will only confirm that he is not worth watching--not now, not ever. If he decides that he is playing witha hostile monster in his studio and acts accordingly, that's a different story.

By the way, if Gregory has any children and lets LaPierre romp, he's not a father I'd want to have.

I find that extremely interesting and disturbing.

There's been a significant increase in prison building by private companies.

This is all about money.

And yes, let Rachel get him - or Lawrence might be even better. Plus, I don't want this whole thing to just go away as is usually the case. Let him keep digging that hole.

I read a bit in LA Times this morning that made a good point. Most murders are committed with handguns, not assault weapons. If there is an assault weapon ban, that would be great and might eliminate some mass shootings, but what to do about handguns?

It is amazing to me how the media feeds on the crap rw crazies put out. I think Americans enjoy the entertainment which is half the problem. But the media is also controlled by what they "think" Americans want to hear and feeds the entertainment. The money machine in the media is not always synchronized with what really works but is more attuned to what statistics tell them. Then unthinking Americans hear it and tend to fall for the approach... it's a circle. One feeds off the other. The problem is breaking that circle.

If the media stopped gearing to the stats, used some creative intuition, and reported news free of entertainment, we could get better information and less bull shit. But entertainment news is the result of media deregulation, and the shock value of jerks like Wayne is what we get. Unfortunately, only some of us will see him for the empty idiot he is, others will eat it up.
