Florida governor asks Obama to block possible ports strike

Source: Reuters

MIAMI (Reuters) - Florida's Republican governor wants President Barack Obama to invoke federal law and order a cooling-off period if nearly 15,000 longshoremen walk off the job in a looming strike that would be a big blow to the state's economy, according to a letter he sent the president this week.

The International Longshoremen's Association union and the U.S. Maritime Alliance grouping of shippers and ports have been bargaining since March but reportedly remain far from a deal covering cargo handling at 15 ports on the U.S. Gulf and eastern coasts.

In October, when a previous contract expired, the sides agreed to a 90-day extension of terms that runs out on December 29.

Florida ports in Miami and Fort Lauderdale would be directly hit by a strike or lockout but a stoppage would also rattle overall transport and trade, which accounts for 550,000 jobs in the state and $66 billion in economic activity, Florida Governor Rick Scott said in a letter dated Thursday.

28. Pres. O should use Obamacare as a bargaining chip. If the Gov implements Obamacare

then President Obama may do what he can to avert or ameliorate the strike.

And then you got yourself a deal.

16. Scott also turned down the high speed rail project...

even after the voters passed a referendum to build it! It would have provided thousands of jobs...I'd hold out for the insurance exchange, giving state employees their retirement money back (reduced 3% by scott), and the high speed train.

Maybe the employers should bargain in good faith, instead of what they've been doing so far.

Scott can go fuck a rolling donut.

I hope President Obama takes no notice, and the ILA shoves it up the Port Authority's ass.

UNLESS(and this is a massive unless)Rick Scott were to agree to set up an insurance exchange as a quid pro quo.

Otherwise, our president doesn't owe Scott a damn thing on this.

14. I can see Obama giving in to Scott

Obama thinks of himself as a RepubliCON and he liked how Raygun did things. Raygun also destroyed Unions, so I can see how this would appeal to Obama compromising soul.

On the other hand, the Unions supported Obama and I have my doubts that Obama would be in office without them. But then Obama killed Acorn who ensured his victory in 2008, so Obama is NOT above stabbing people in the back, much like Raygun stabbed the air traffic controllers in the back.

So, we can joke but Obama is probably on fence on this one.

15. Florida's constitution allows for collective bargaining...

so that's likely why volderscott wants a federal intervention. We've had a series of court rulings here where the GOP has lost out trying to get rid of unions and contracts. Since he tried (and failed) to get rid of three state supreme court judges last november, there may not be too many state court friends left for him to appeal to...

17. Imagine the President answering Scott's call.

Hello, Talk louder, I can't hear you. Hello, What was that? You'll have to speak up. What? louder.
First Lady: "Who was that?"
President: "Some crank with a bad cell phone, or calling from the Bermuda Triangle."
Let Floridians stew in their own juices. They elected that second hand embezzler and big time thief.

18. A cooling off period is a tactic too many suggest when in fact

the negotiating process has been very orderly considering they have been trying to reach a contract since March. They could had gone out on strike when the contract ran out in October. Instead, they agreed to a 90 day extension.

Maybe if the governor was really serious he would order the shippers and ports to settle with the ILA.

20. It's time. If the shippers want labor peace.......

let them settle with the ILA. It's time to start clawing back some of that wealth that's been stolen over the last 30+ years from the working class and a strike is the ONLY weapon a worker has. The ILWU knows how to be militant. It's time the rest of us learned how.

24. Obama, as candidate, promised to walk the picket line with strikers. Since he hasn't done that

the least he can do is let the parties involved in the labor dispute work it out for themselves.

27. Not to mention

Of all the GOP governors, the one who has the least amount of favor is Scott; this is the fellow who helped drive Charlie Crist out for being "the fellow that hugged Obama." Obama would be paying Crist back by letting Scott hang in the air till the election cuts him down!

29. I got a

answer to give Scott since he don't know how to solve the problems of his State. President Obama should be glad to interfere and be the negotiator between the two sides. Whatever he decides, the two sides should abide by. President Obama should write Scott a public letter to be placed in all the Florida newspapers, of the terms of the agreement with Governor Scott. He should also ask that Scott approve on a High Rail speed system, that will solve transportation problems in Florida as well as producing more jobs. This system will also produce a dual system for transporting goods in Florida's economy. What say ye Governor Scott?

30. Oh. Scott wants the FEDERAL government to intervene for him. Scott crying for daddy. How quaint.

Hopefully Scott is on his last legs. He bought the election Alex Sink should have won. We may not have had these problems continue or the election disenfranchisement we experienced in FL if the rightful winner was in office. After all, she was a banker for many years. She would know how to negotiate anyway. She now is in the business of helping young people, small business and entrepreneurs. Check out floridanext.org

Safety nets for the elderly and sick, workers' rights...

This is the type of thinking that follows when corporate morality infects our government and our national conversations...
