Syria Unleashes Cluster Bombs on Town, Punishing Civilians

Source: New York Times

MAREA, Syria — The plane came in from the southeast late in the afternoon, releasing its weapons in a single pass. Within seconds, scores of finned bomblets struck and exploded on the homes and narrow streets of this small Syrian town.

After the screams and the desperate gathering of the victims, the staff at the local Freedom Hospital counted 4 dead and 23 wounded. All were civilians, doctors and residents said.

Many forms of violence and hardship have befallen Syria’s people as the country’s civil war has escalated this year. But the Syrian government’s attack here on Dec. 12 pointed to one of the war’s irrefutable patterns: the deliberate targeting of civilians by President Bashar al-Assad’s military, in this case with a weapon that is impossible to use precisely.

Syrians on both sides in this fight have suffered from the bloodshed and sectarian furies given dark license by the war. The victims of the cluster bomb attacks describe the tactic as collective punishment, a mass reprisal against populations that are with the rebels.

1. Does the Assad regime survive?

It seems like he is finding a way to hold on.

2. How do

you identify civilians in a civil war? I would like the American media to answer that question. Do they say the same thing when we do it, or is it when the enemy does it? War is not clean no matter how the other side wants to portray it. It is killing period. it is like the late General Sherman said.

5. The Syrian AF stock of munitions is so depleted, they're not going to waste bombs on punative raids

This doesn't make any more sense than "reports" about the regime firing off Scud B ballistic missiles at rebel Toyota trucks. Oh, there it is at the bottom of the article, the editor had to correct CJ Chivers - there have been no ballistic missile launches. Chivers, who's pretty knowledgeable about general military matters should know better.

Now we're supposed to take this about jets using cluster ordinance on isolated villages -- for no apparent reason, other than they are civilians -- at face value?

This is a Chivers opinion article. One could call it propaganda, not news reporting. It isn't even plausible or accurate. The Times should put Chivers on notice. He's clearly taken sides and lacks professional journalistic standards and perspective.

6. COULD WE BE NEXT??

This country has plenty of weapons and plenty of crazy people who want to kill others. It will only be some time in the future when our own weapons will be used on us people who live in the country of the free and brave.
