HONOLULU (AP) U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa will apply for the Senate vacancy created by the death of Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, her spokesman said Wednesday.

Hanabusa, 61, is the early favorite for the post, having won the endorsement of Inouye, a fellow Democrat.

Inouye said in a letter to Gov. Neil Abercrombie dated Monday that his last wish was for Hanabusa to succeed him. Inouye died that day from respiratory complications. He was 88.

On Thursday, Inouye will be the first person to lie in state at the Capitol rotunda since Ronald Reagan, Rosa Parks and Gerald Ford.

Abercrombie will decide Inouye's replacement. His spokeswoman, Louise Kim McCoy, declined to comment Wednesday on how much weight the governor might give to Inouye's request in appointing his replacement.

1. I don't live in Hawaii, I have no connection there-no relatives, no friends, nothing at all

But I really, really hope this outstanding lady is Daniel Inouye's sucessor. He was a hero and she has incredible potential!

2. I live in Hawai'i..

Yeah, I hope this happens, too.

I haven't been able to find out how her newly elected US Congressional Seat would be filled, though?

3. I would assume a new election and I'll bet money that somehow Ed Case winds up....

living in the district and running for the seat! Hopefully he'll lose.

5. I don't live in Hawaii but go every year and follow the politics

What is it about Ed Case that people find so disagreeable. It seems he is always running for some vacant office and loses all the time. I have a good friend who lives there and she just said that the Japanese ancestry people who control politics in Hawaii just don't like him. I get why they don't like Linda Lingle her cutting school funds and days to 4 days a week pissed off a lot of Hawaiians. Plus she was too corporate for Hawaii.

6. The book on Case is that he's a DINO...at least, that's what is said.

I don't even know if the guy has ever WON an election, so it's hard to say how people draw their conclusions on that...but if Hawaii DU'ers are down on him, why not trust them on this?

7. Ed Case is a DLC member

and is a DINO. He is worse than Joe Lieberman, and would be a liability to the Democratic Party in Congress. Your "good friend" obviously doesn't understand Hawaii politics, and the remark about "Japanese ancestry people" reeks of racism. Democrats control politics in Hawaii for the most part, regardless of their ethnicity, and that's as it should be.

Having lived in Hawaii all of my adult life (since before statehood), I can assure you that racial harmony is one of the tenents of the Aloha Spirit. Sadly, the Mainland mentality doesn't blend well with local values and traditions, and many Haoles tend to ascribe racial bias to things they don't understand.

Colleen Hanabusa would be a great choice to replace Uncle Dan, but I agree that her replacement in the House may not be all that Hawaii Democrats would hope for.

8. The one thing I love about Hawaii is the multiculturalism.

I'm sorry if you interpreted my comment as racist I am only repeating what I heard from my friend. Hawaii is the only place I would move to in a heartbeat if I could afford it. I live in San Francisco and it is a great place to live but I could definitely fit into the Aloha spirit. When I go to Hawaii I stay in an Ohana hotel that is owned by Hawaiians not a major corporation. I try to buy as much local as possible. I read the Star Bulletin. I hope Colleen Hanabusa gets appointed and elected as Senator.

9. Thanks for the response, and

I wasn't implying that you are a racist, but your friend's comment is all too typical of what we call "the Mainland mentality."

Take care, and aloha no.
